My son is in the process of recovering from vzv meningitis. He got out of the hospital at the end of September. He is really suffering from headaches . We did the follow up consultant visit last week. The consultant prescribed 400 mg of naproxen twice daily but it's not doing anything to help. We're thinking of trying acupuncture ( or he is ) Any suggestions to stop the pressure in his head ?

Does he have any dizziness? Or neck pain or tension associated with the headaches? Just yesterday my physiotherapist did something brilliant! By manipulation of vertebrae at the base of my skull, and the associated tendons she fixed a longstanding neuropathy. I was faced down on a couch so she could apply a bit of pressure but it wasn’t a painful procedure. The relief was immediate and felt miraculous after so long of pain or discomfort. My pain (or sometimes just a very weird sensation) had been in the whole right side of my head - including a ‘pulling’ on my eyeball. Amitriptiline and Gabapentin had been tried, as had acupuncture, self-massage and exercise, and I’d barely mentioned it to the physio as I didn’t think it was part of their skill set. It just came up when we were talking about what I could do to fix my dizziness. So, so amazed at what she has achieved. She also gave me exercises to prevent recurrences of the tension (which she figures was a consequence of the dizziness, ie. me tensing against the kind of motion that made me giddy.)

There are many types of headaches and causes of them, and many folk in these forums (and the M.E. forums) seem to find relief from Cranial Osteopathy, or something else called Cranio-sacral Therapy. I’ve tried neither but, after what my Physio achieved, I can well believe that kind of manipulation is worth trying.

I hope you find your relief, Azza. It is seems hard to heal when the pain is so close to your sense of self but, while you are waiting for help from a therapist, try this to help yourself: look up “isometric exercises” and try a few out. It’s a kind of exercise you can do without the uncomfortable movements that aggravate a headache. By tensing-and-relaxing you might be able achieve a release of tension in your head. If it feels terrible just stop. But if it just feels uncomfortable then it might work. Plus, it’s exercise - so “yayy!”

Good luck, Azza!

For me, relief from the headaches was from cranial osteopathy. I'd had 16 weeks of migraine like headaches and after only two sessions of cranial osteopathy, the headaches stopped. Most medical doctors will tell you cranial osteopathy is nonsense. Don't listen to them. It was like a small miracle for me.

If all else fails try generic bupap. Check dose on and use Rxsaver to save money. I’ve been at this for 55 yrs and it’s the only Med that helps me. 😊
