Headaches following meningitis.

Hi my son Joe had pneumococcal meningitis and septacaemia at the age of 9 months. He thankfully survived but suffered brain damage to do with coordinating movement down one side. He went on to be the first child at nursery to ride a bike at the age of 3 without stabilisers! He is now 12 and doing great. However, for the last 6 months he has suffered with a headache EVERY day. Sometimes low lying and sometimes bad with dislike of light and dizziness. He has also had lots of different infections and his school attendance is now down to 59%. The hospital don't know why they are occuring, his MRI scan was clear. His GP says we will never know if the headaches are related to meningitis as there is no way of knowing. Taking Pizotifen has helped but not with the cause. Has any one else suffered on going headaches years later? Thanks.

Wish I had good news for you, but I can only relate my own experience.

There IS a KNOWN connection with headaches, however finding a medical professional that is in the know was impossible when I caught BM in 1980 and it does not seem to have improved much since.

The best advice I can give you is do some research and educate your doctor, in fairness to GPs not many of them see the illness and they do not get basic training yet alone training on the advanced implications and long term problems of Meningitis
