VM keep getting symptoms after recovery

Just checking to see if anyone has experienced symptoms from VM even though you thought you where fully recovered.

I ended up with VM in June 2017 and was really sick for 10 days and in the hospital for 3 days. I had all the normal symptoms for VM: Headache, stiff neck, vertigo and fever. It took about 2 month to recover and did not think more about it.

However now 5 month later I am sick and get exactly the same symptoms, I actually thought I had contracted VM again so I went to the doc but no meningitis is present.

I had near fatal VM in 2002 and was told then that I would be better in two to three weeks, in fact after four months my doctor told me I was better. Unfortunately VM is a disease which just keeps on giving, for symptoms to recur in the first few months is very common and usually occurs when your body is getting run down or you're tired. After effects of VM are also very common and not really understood my the medical profession who are taught in training that VM is a) never serious and b) that it has the same recovery profile as all other types of meningitis which is just not the case at all. Persistent recurring VM is called Mollaret's Meningitis which is rare but .I was diagnosed with it in 2010. This is usually diagnosed after two plus years following VM but there are no hard and fast rules with this disease. When the symptoms return then it's a case of resting, resting then resting some more I'm afraid. Hope this helps.

Hi. DOnt worry. You aren't alone. I had VM in aug this year. Then late nov another episode. But the doctors tell you it's not the same virus. Yet they don't know what. It is real. It does happen. We just don't know why and when. Chin up. My episode lasted 2 months first one. But 2.5 weeks second one. So hopefully they get less each time

Middle of November started to feel unwell. Admitted to hospital and after CT scan and lumbar puncture VM was diagnosed. 3 days in hospital on drips etc as precautionary treated as bacterial until viral diagnosed. Discharged told to rest and plenty of fluids, would take 7-10 days.

Work in education and still not back at work. I am what i would call into the 'hangover' stage now. I usually spend my life chasing after 50-60 young children, getting up, showered, dressed takes it out of me still. I am so tired and my get up and go has gone. Can not tolerate what i call 'busy' noise, people etc etc. Just feel like I am completely drained.

My Dr is supportive to the point of its normal, what I am experiencing now is post viral fatigue so she says. How long, well how long is a piece a string?

I am worried about work, worried why again (had back in 2014 and took a good 6 months to get back to speed ) but the good days / times are more now then not so on the mend.

It's like my Dr said not just any old virus. It's serious, be ki d to yourself and take time to recover.

I am in the same boat only it's been 19 months since my VM diagnosis. I was out of work for 3 months; I am a principal in an elementary school and was lucky to be able to come back for the end of the summer when things were slow. I found a neuropsychologist who led me to acupuncture and cranio sachral therapy and also helped with my state of mind. The doctors had no clue what to do with me, but these therapists really helped. I really felt well this past summer and have not been back to the acupuncture or massage, but the stress of the school year seems to have exacerbated the "hangover" feeling so I am going to give them a try again.

From what I've learned, some of these after effects will be with us forever. I often say most of the time I feel well enough, just not well.
