Waiting for results

My niece of 13 years old is in a coma from yesterday. She is in hospital in London, I believe in good care. Apparently she showed symptoms of flu and headache over the weekend. We are waiting for her to be taken for a MRI scan. I feel lost for I am on the other side of the world, and would do anything to be by her side right now.

Hi, I'm sure your niece is in good hands, but it must be frustrating being the other side of the world. I hear a lot of people saying they were in a coma, I certainly was for about a week. I think it's medically induced just to shut everything down and give the antibiotics to start to work and the brain a chance to start to recover.

I was the same with flu like symptoms, actually it was not unlike a bad hangover with a flu at the same time.

Recovery can take a long time, sounds like she has youth on her side, I was 44 when I was ill with it 9 years ago..

All the best and I hope things improve for your niece.

Graham

Hi Graham.

How is your health now after all this time?

She fell into a coma before she was taken to hospital. And there, like you say, I'm sure the sedation extended unconsciousness. We are just greatful the was medically in great hands.

Hi,

Yes, my health is fine now, thanks. I suffer a little bit with fatigue, but rest / sleeping fixes that and it doesn't have any adverse effect on me.

I'm sure the medics will be making sure she has the best care possible. God willing she'll be back talked Michael with you soon.

Thank you Michael. Yes she in in great hands. She woke up after a few days and loads of tests. MRI, EEG, Lumber p. etc. All showed negative for meningitis. So the tests continues. We are very relieved she is ok, but what is still worrying is what could have caused the coma. I have to thank the great care from St George's and St Peter's hospitals.

so pleased she is doing well but must be very worrying not knowing what happened to cause it. Wishing your niece all the very best. Sounds like she has an amazing family who love her very much xx

Is your niece alright now!

Did docs find out what caused the coma?

She is alright thank you. They have not found the cause of the coma, but she's going for a weekly check up in any case. They speculate that it might have been a virus, but no solid conclusion has been made.

She's still a bit pale, but is back at school and passing tests with flying colours.
