HSV-1 Viral Meningitis

Hi all,

I'm new to Meningitis Now and would like to firstly thank you all for being part of this forum, it seems a really supportive group.

I am still in hospital after being diagnosed with HSV-1 viral meningitis, confirmed on LP. The doctors keep saying they don't often see HSV-1 meningitis so I just wanted to find out if anyone here has been diagnosed with it? I have been on IV Aciclovir for 12 days so far.

That is called Mollaret's Meningitis. You can check out the Mollaret's Meningitis Association at mollarets.org. We also have a support group on Facebook with several hundred others at Facebook.com/groups/MMSuppo.... It is recurring viral meningitis. I hope our association can help you learn more about it.

Hello, I do hope you are starting to feel better now. HSV infection is one of the more common causes of viral meningitis. In most cases, people make a good recovery (although recovery can sometimes be slow). If this is your first episode of viral meningitis, please be aware that is it is very rare to suffer from meningitis more than once.

Mollerats meningitis, as mentioned in a post, is a rare condition, causing recurring viral meningitis and is more commonly associated with HSV-2 infection.

Thanks Claire for your detailed reply, really helpful. They believe I had some element of encephalitis which has responded well to the prolonged IV aciclovir. I feel much better but am so exhausted, have some dysphasia when very tired and neck/head pains. I do hope it carries on improving and thank you all at MN for your invaluable support and advice.
