I have a sister 70 yrs and her partner 83 who both have learning difficulties. They have been together for more than 50 years. They are still single but live together in sheltered accommodation which only has a day warden. They do not offer any health care or daily support. They are both starting to struggle and need more services. We are desperate that they remain together. My other sister supports them with shopping and all kinds of care but is now too old to continue. Where can we start to move things forward. ? During the last 10 years social services have been cut more and more and both no longer have social workers. It feels like they have been totally abandoned. Can anyone suggest a reliable Charity/Organisation/agency that could help. any advice would be truly appreciated.
What to do next ?: I have a sister 70 yrs and her... - Mencap
What to do next ?
Try the mencap helpline do they need an advocate look up advocacy services in your area. also the carers association as they have specific workers that work with people with people who care for those with a learning disability. I would also try adult social services as well they are still there to help you. Good luck x
If you have a CARERS Centre in your area, look them up and give them a ring to make an appointment if possible as they will be able to give you lots of advice on how to help your sister and partner and support you in accessing what help they might need. They really are a hub of information and possibly a good place to start. Good luck
Hello Alfie. First of all, I congratulate all of you for managing over the years. It's great that your sister and her partner have been able to stay together, but now you obviously need to think about the years ahead. Along from the suggestions already made I would definitely get on the radar of social services. Your sister and partner probably no longer have an allocated social worker because you and your family have helped them manage well for so long, but it would be a good time to contact the duty social worker in your local adult services team and ask for a referral to help with future planning. It may take a while, but to get access what services might be available it would help. Make sure that all appropriate benefits and allowances are being claimed too. Good luck.
Thank you so much 👍
