Should I ring my GP to find out what group will I and my son be in?

Hi everyone

Should I let my GP know I am a unpaid carer for my son 20 years old who has learning disability IQ of 56 and autism , I am 54 years old , what priority list will I be in and also how do they access for profound and severe learning disability. I am very anxious for my son as he should be vaccinated he also has moderate asthma and what group will be in for vaccinations for COVID . Please could provide with some advice.

it would be worth phoning the practice to see if you are registered as a carer.. and if not ask to be registered. As for your son - I am in same position and although it is clear to me they should have vaccine.... they dont seem to make it to the list.

Thank you, I rang GP surgery today and I wasn’t registered as a carer so they have now updated the information and in the afternoon I received a phone call from surgery to have a COVID vaccine for me but not my son, I would have rather wanted my son to have the vaccine as he is so anxious and won’t go out side even in the garden.

I know. it is bonkers and unfair. not been offered a jab yet.

This is something we are seeing again and again.

Please let us know if you hear back about your son. Check if your GP has him in Group 6 to make sure he gets priority.

Thank you , GP rang yesterday and offered my son COVID vaccine all to do with pressure of Mencap’s campaign thank you everyone.

We are delighted by yesterday's announcement that all people with a learning disability will be offered a vaccine.

As you can see, Severe and profound learning disability's are in Group 6, please check with your GP that this is also on his record. I see someone also mentioned about unpaid carers are also entitled to have the vaccine.

The main risk groups identified by the Committee are as follows:

Chronic respiratory disease, including chronic obstructive

pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis and severe asthma

Chronic heart disease (and vascular disease)

Chronic kidney disease

Chronic liver disease

Chronic neurological disease including epilepsy

Down’s syndrome

*******Severe and profound learning disability******

Diabetes

Solid organ, bone marrow and stem cell transplant recipients

People with specific cancers

Immunosuppression due to disease or treatment

Asplenia and splenic dysfunction

Morbid obesity

Severe mental illness.

Other groups at higher risk, including those who are in receipt of a carer’s allowance, or those who are the main carer of an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if the carer falls ill, should also be offered vaccination alongside these groups.
