Hi:) I’m new here and wondered who get benefits for their disabilities?

I have a learning disability and ADHD and my son who is 12 has ADHD and Autism. I’m from England but have been living in Canada and don’t like it cause it’s not home. Would like to move back to England but scared cause I don’t know what help we could get. I get help in Canada but don’t want to stay cause the money. Can’t buy happiness with money!

Hello Hidden

Welcome to this community, and thanks for posting your question. I am sorry you aren't happy in Canada.

The support could get in England will depend what you, and your son, need. It may also depend on where you live, and how much money you have.

Here is a page that has some links about benefits - mencap.org.uk/advice-and-su...

You may be able to get help from the local council (in the area that you move to) . Here is a bit more about this - mencap.org.uk/advice-and-su...

Your son is also likely to get support at school.

A move back to England would be huge. It will be really important to make sure you get the support you and your son need before you make any plans. A few things that could help you:

> do you have any family or friends who live in England who could help you find out what is available where you are planning on moving to?

> it would be worth trying to contact our helpline to find out more about benefits and other help that you may be able to get. Benefits can be quite complicated so it would help to talk to someone who knows a lot about them. Mencap's helpline have an online form where you can ask your questions - mencap.org.uk/contact/conta...

I wish you the best with this. Please let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

Sarah

Hi Sarah:)

Thanks very much for replying to my message. I do have family and friends there still. I have a friend who lives in West Sussex where I use to live. She works with adults with autism and is going to help me. I will look at the websites links too you sent.

Take care and keep safe :))

I live in supported living because of my disability. There are many care homes available

What’s it like in supported living? Do parents have their kids living with them? :))

Children are not allowed unfortunately and not disabled children so you got to have some maturity which I don’t have. However I look for work and have worked in a nursery. I sometimes have help with cooking

Thank you for replying twice:)

I kind of guessed kids aren’t allowed. Good for you for getting help for yourself:))
