A Strava Question

Strava keeps trying to persuade me to sign up for the paid version. Does anyone else? Do you get lots more really useful information? Is it worth it in other words! Thanks 😊.

I get ads too but not interested in getting the premium services. The basic seems good enough to me.

That’s pretty much how I feel. Thank you. 😊

The free version is good enough for me 😁I've also recently cancelled Spotify premium 🤣

You've cancelled Spotify? 😱 I love my playlists

Will see how it goes 😁!

I use spotify at home as well as when I'm out running, and for podcasts. I used to buy loads of CDs so it works financially and storage wise.

Absolutely, i get it !I may well take it up again before long 😁

I have a Spotify playlist that lasts 60 hours 30 minutes, OK for a ultra marathon but not for a 5K👍

The rest of my family are keen cyclists and belong to clubs etc. They all have premium but I just have the free version. Two of my sons live in other parts of the country and I like being able to keep in touch and share kudos.

Frenc profile image

Yes it’s great for that. I see my brother more on Strava than in real life and he doesn’t live that far away 🤣.

Haha, me too 🤣

Less money spent on Strava = more money to spend on running kit 🥳 no brainer Frenc

Is another right answer! Thanks Imc50 🤩.

I had it for a year or two. It was cheaper back then. When the price went up I didn't renew it, and I'm not tempted to go back at that price to be honest (and I do like my stats!!!)

That’s good to hear. I think the general consensus is not to sign up for it! It’s really interesting as I’d assumed most people would have it, but not so. Thanks Linda! 😊

Garmin’s stats are more than enough for me 😊

Frenc profile image

Thanks Tasha, I agree! Mind you I probably don’t make the most of what Garmin offers. I may have a fiddle at work tomorrow (it’s quiet at the moment 🤣).

I agree with Tasha.

My husband is a cyclist & has premium. He uses it to plan and navigate routes. I only have the free version. It has been useful for trail running for us. You can see the routes others run & hit save to your Garmin. We will certainly be using it to run Rottnest on our holiday.

Sounds like a plan, enjoy your holiday routes trying to dodge the poo in your new trainers! 😊

Hi Frenc. I have the premium version and think the routing facility is great and, for what it costs per annum, is good value.

Frenc profile image
FrencHalf Marathon in reply to Chesterlove

Ah a routing facility. That sounds interesting…. Thank you! 😊

Chesterlove profile image

I use the facility frequently to plot longer routes but particularly when I go away and don’t know the area. You can then ‘use’ the route as you run to keep you on track.

I use the free version. While route planning sounds interesting, many of the paths I run on don't exist in Strava, and round here I've met precisely two other runners in almost 20 months of runnning.

Garmin Connect has route planning, too!

Cmoi profile image
CmoiMarathon in reply to nowster

Thanks, but it's a similar story. There's just not enough data to get useful results - Connect wants me to start a minimum of 10k away! It's easier to improvise.

Frenc profile image

Sounds as though you very much have the place to yourself for the most part!

Cmoi profile image

In terms of running, yes. Depending on the season and the terrain I do meet cyclists, ramblers, farmers, hunters, mushroom pickers and lumberjacks though!

I like the route planning function which I use a lot and enjoy being able to follow along on my phone. I originally got it for the beacon function but use Garmin livetrack now.

I have premium but I don't really use a lot of the premium features. For the majority of folksI think the free version is super.

There were only a couple of things that I kept with premium for, struggling to remember now, I'll have a look

Personal heatmap - I love being able to see where I've been

Training log, all my activities in one place, yes I could use garmin but I barely look at that! 🤣

I don't use the routing. Its useless for the kind of stuff I like. I use os maps.

Frenc profile image
FrencHalf Marathon in reply to GoGo_JoJo

Thank you for the insight GoGo_JoJo, the heat map sounds interesting. OS maps sound a good idea, I have my eye on adding to a route but it’s quite hard to work out what and what isn’t possible on Google maps - it’s in the middle of nowhere and I don’t want to get lost! 😃

GoGo_JoJo profile image
GoGo_JoJoUltramarathon in reply to Frenc

Google maps is useless for routes!! You need os quality mapping with trails/bridleways etc. There are some free apps out there but I pay 24 quid a year for os (there's usually av free 3 month trial) and I more than get my moneys worth 👍🏻

Thanks for the heads up 😊.

I love the paid version, it is so helpful it gives an indication of the effort of every run, gives points, so in any week I can see how taxing my running program has been, interesting a particular route I walk is 10 points but can be 70 points if I run, depending on the effort. Many other features which are very helpful.

Frenc profile image

Ah thank you for replying 😊. You sound as though you get a lot out of it. I’m still a bit on the fence if I’m honest, but you never know!
