HUHM 10k race report

Right, race report! To help me along, I’ve compiled my own 170 bpm playlist. My aim was to complete the 10k in under an hour, starting off at around 5:50/km and pushing it towards the end.

As usual, my starting off easy didn’t go too well, completing the first 1k in 5:21. In my defence, it is mostly downhill and I didn’t get up to the average heart rate for the run until the 2nd km. Towards the end of the 2nd km, there’s a river valley, my pace peaked on the way down and I came up the other side reasonably quick. I then managed to settle in to a steadier pace although my slowest split was 5:41.

I aimed to put in some extra effort for the last 1k however, that includes crossing the river valley again with the climb back out; still, I completed it at a smidgeon faster than my average pace. By the end, I felt like I didn’t have much effort left so I think that I’d, somehow, managed to pace it about right.

If I ignore the first 1k, the last 5 splits were faster than the first so I’m almost getting negative splits.

I’m sure the playlist helped, with some of the tracks, I seemed to gain speed without having to put in extra effort, felt like I was almost flying along! If you’ve access to Deezer, you might be able to find it by searching for “09_Run_170BPM” maybe I should just point out that it’s not exactly easy listening!

Couldn’t get the RunGo list to work: the app complained that it couldn’t access the server. Ended up reading all the prompts before I started (maybe that’s why I started off too fast!) I’ll have another go for the HM.

As usual, I ran past the target distance to ensure that Strava recognises the full distance. VeloViewer shows my 10K time as 54:33 which is a new PR for me!

Oh wow! I’d love a Pb of that time! I haven’t don’t a 10k timed for nearly 2 years and I was 58:37 I think. Huge well done! You must be so proud. I’ve never tried a cadence song 🤔

Cheers Tasha. Reckon I kept in step with the tracks until the last 30 seconds or so when I just didn't have the energy.

Well done, SM. Really impressive that you speeded up in the second half.

Super speedy! Well done! I find I run to the song rhythm and have used spotify playlists for certain speeds. How do you find out which songs have the right bpm?

Cheers!

Putting the playlist together was a bit laborious. I’ve downloaded an app called “BPM counter”, I decided on a target of 170 +/- 5 BPM then worked my way through my favourites on Deezer. The app has a button that you tap to the rhythm and shows the BPM. I just added tracks that fitted to my 170 BPM playlist. There are some that are bang on (e.g. “Runnin’ Down A Dream” from Tom Petty and “Asche zu Asche” from Rammstein). There are others like “Heaven Knows” from The Pretty Reckless that only go at half the rate but I found it’s easy enough to synch every other step to these. I included “Communication Breakdown” by Zeppelin but I found that the time signature varied too much so I probably won’t use that again.

Ok thank you, I will have a look. I do like picking my own tunes 😊 though I'm always open to new music ideas.

Big congrats! 🎉🎊🍾🥳 Shame the RunGo App didn’t work but it didn’t hold you back! Nice!

Congrats on the PB! Strava has been acting a bit odd with some updates as there have been some widely shared tricksters who have been pausing and restarting to appear better than they really are.🐱 Katnap 🐱

Wow! That's a magnificent run!!! Music really influences my pace, it's impossible to resist the beat 😀 Better luck with RunGo for the HM - and good luck getting the legs recovered in time for the HM 😅

Thanks Linda. I'm planning on taking a break this week so I'll be better prepared on Friday. Also intend to re-use the same playlist.

Although I'd increased cadence, MapMyFitness still complained that it was too low because the faster pace raised the target cadence.

I seem to have fixed the RunGo problem by clearing its cache.
