Ok; so I hadn’t fixed my calf/achilles problem!!

I postponed my long run until today as I was still “feeling” my left calf a bit yesterday. 2 dog walks later, plus exercises, all felt fine by lunch time today, so off I went! The fact that I managed 12.25k out of a planned 15k shows that it didn’t hurt too much, but it hurt enough! I just decided “what is the point of making this worse ?” and stopped the run. Physio appointment on Monday and I will do relevant exercises in the meantime. I thought it was just a tight calf/achilles, but I was clearly wrong. It feels like a 3 week job, which will send me sliding back down the snake of my HM programme (only snakes in running; there are no ladders 😊) but the truth is that this all part of what we do. Ice, elevation etc etc will be deployed; the next best thing to avoiding injuries is doing the right thing when they come along. I was probably over optimistic when I thought things were ok this morning (physio will probably redefine that as being an idiot 😂😂). Onwards and upwards!!

Thanks roseabi. I know that I should have gone for a short run to be on the safe side; but there you go!🙂

Arrgghh, that's annoying. If it makes you feel any better I kept being optimistic with mine and generally only got to 3k each time before even my optimistic head hadnto concede that continuing was the wrong choice 😀. I now have hip pain, but the up side is my calf will probably be fully healed whenever I next get to run!!! There's snakes everywhere 🙄. Am sure the physio will get you back on track promptly. Good luck and speedy healing 🤞

That just makes you more sensible than me. 🙂

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Beachcomber66

Oh I like that perspective! I was thinking I was less sensible because I couldn't wait til it was at least good for 12k!!!

Beachcomber66 profile image

Starting with 3ks is my usual rehab routine; this was a big exception!!

Oh no Beachcomber66, a wise move to curtail your run. At least you didn’t take up the speed challenge so you can’t blame it on that this time.

Have you got your physio’s number on speed-dial?

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to Dexy5

😂😂😂. I can self book on her web site. In fairness it is about 4 months since my last visit. I did flag up that it wasn’t my knee this time.

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy510 Miles in reply to Beachcomber66

Only joking 🙃 . You have done brilliantly since your last injury and I’m sure you’ll sort this out, probably by doing the same exercises I did earlier in the year.

Similar to you, I concentrated on doing the exercises for my knee (glutes, thighs and knees) and then the calves and Achilles got left behind. So when I increased my running again they were the weak point.

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to Dexy5

I think that is exactly what has happened. I am back up to just shy of 100k per month; the additional distance tends to expose any weaknesses. Glad I am not going to see physio having participated in the speed challenge; that would have been very embarrassing!!

Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to GoGo_JoJo

Thanks JoJo. I hope that it isn’t a big deal this time; doesn’t feel like it. Physio is of the “if you can keep running do!” philosophy so she probably won’t be too school ma’am about it 🙂

Positively reframing BC, at least you stopped when you did! Hope the physio isn't too harsh on you.....

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to JonathanP

As I said to Jojo, she tends to be of the “run if you can” persuasion . It felt fine before the run, it just became more uncomfortable as I progressed. VO2 max docked me a point too; no justice!🙂

She’s harsh in other ways though isn’t she BC 🥴

All the best with the problem 👍🏽

🤞🏽 for roseberry. We’re marshalling if it’s on but not sure which race or where Xx

Thanks Tasha. I have deferred Roseberry until next year; my one sensible move in all this! She is fine!!! (Certainly not going to pick a fight before going for treatment!!🙂)

Adding insult to injury BC!

A good distance so that gives you some solace. Let us know the outcome and look after yourself 🙂

Cheers GTFC, it will be fine I am sure. One thing about having had a few injuries is that you learn how to deal with them; avoiding them would be better though 🙂

Waaaaah! That’s a pain BC, you were doing so well. At least you had the wherewithal to quit rather than push further. And no biggie if you’re a bit behind with your HM training - you’re not missing any races!

Get yourself in tiptop condition for when we’re all set free again. 😀🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️😀

Thanks CC. Apart from my rehab exercises, the only cross training I am doing is walking Molly. Be good to get back to swimming and maybe try out the elliptical too; when it is safe.

I don’t think the weather helps either - colder to start with, not able to warm up as quickly and probably less active than in warmer weather. At least you know what to do to keep it at bay until you see your wonderful physio!

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to Sandie1961

Hi Sandie; cold could be a factor, but I think my lower leg just wasn’t strong enough for the sum of the distances I have been running. Physio will have the answer I am sure. I had an injury in the same position just after I got to 10k the first time around. If I remember correctly I had to take two weeks off running, do my rehab every day and then build up from 3k. I have had a lot worse this year!🙂

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Half Marathon in reply to Beachcomber66

Oh well, plenty of time during Tier 3 (not) lockdown to build back up!

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to Sandie1961

My physio is in tier 2; good job I got injured this week and not next. None of our kids will be coming home this Christmas; we have encouraged them to stay where they are. Not worth the risk.

My son is coming for Xmas (he decamped from London back to his girlfriend’s in Northamptonshire again to sit it out) and we are hoping to see my stepdaughter and the girls on Boxing Day (Mr Sandie’s birthday), but, with 3 sets of grandparents, they’ll need to decide who misses out this year 😢

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to Sandie1961

Easier for us in a way; one is shielding, one has in laws in tier 2 and the other lives in Canada.,We will settle for having a blast when all this is more under control( can’t bring myself to use the word ‘over’!

Very sensible to stop BC, it’s always tricky to judge “when” and “if” and I find by the time it takes me to make up my mind, the body has decided for me 😩

Fingers crossed for a return soon 🤞

I think maybe I should have stopped earlier....but it was long run day 🙄

Most of us probably have come to the conclusion that we should have stopped earlier 🙄

Beachcomber66 profile image

It’s a conundrum. You have to be determined to be a runner, which makes it hard to quit when you really should. 🤔 best excuse I can come up with !
