Cross Training

Week two of the autumn half marathon training and normally I’d get my bike out for a little bit of cross training but this week there was an opportunity to take the kayak out for a trip down the river. Most of the local rivers are tidal so a bit of planning is needed unless you want to battle against the tide. An early start on Tuesday, but a glorious two and a half hours of paddling, I love that you can glide by and get so close to nature, swans, a heron, mallard ducks, geese and cows grazing in the fields, a great way to spend the morning.

How does everyone else like to cross train?

Oooh! How lovely! I think I'd like to cross train like that too! I usually cycle and do yoga. I sometimes think about doing strength or core routines, but they rarely ever happen in practice. Cross training really does need to be something you enjoy or it just doesn't happen.

I don’t get out often enough, but it certainly ticks the core and strength boxes especially if you’ve got the tides wrong! Yoga is meant to be great for core and strength, I haven’t tried that yet but it’s on my list.

Kayaking looks so serene, but I bet it’s a great workout for the upper body. 🛶 Pretty much guaranteed beautiful scenery too!

All I do is daily yoga, some of which is fairly hard work, other times less so - and dog walk. 🐾 I do sporadic online abs workouts, but not at all consistent. It’s lucky I run, as I also love my food! 😀

It is very serene, sometimes find myself drifting off, not always good especially if you get wedged in the reeds. 😂

Lots of people mention the benefits of yoga for strength, core and meditation, I’m not sure by brain will switch off long enough to meditate. Occasionally do a bit of pilates and JuJus plank exercises.

Quite a few of us on HU follow Yoga with Adriene’s YouTube channel, and her yoga sessions are varied. It’s not all meditation, in fact the vast majority of it isn’t (I can’t switch off either!) It’s good for all levels, so worth checking out maybe! 🧘‍♀️

Windsurfing!

I also would normally be swimming and cycling, but at the moment it's just too damn windy 😄

Windsurfing, now that’s a full body workout. 😊

Can’t wait for swimming pools to open again, not long now. 🤞

I got a bike about a month ago to get some cross-training in and I'm absolutely loving it! 😀

That looks so peaceful and such a pleasant way to cross train 😀 I did pilates before lockdown which I loved and found quite relaxing - hopefully be able to start that again soon. Does walking the dog count as cross training? I think I might try some Yoga with Adrienne vids and see how I get on with them 😀

I think dog 🐕 walking counts as a cross training activity. Have you tried Canicross? cani-fit.com looks fun!
