Autumn 2020 Half Marathon Group 😍 Getting the most out of your training and our new Strava club

Hi Happy Half Marathoners!

So now it’s time to really get started!!!! πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

β˜… Getting the most out of your training

Most of us have a training plan in mind now, many of you have already got going. We need to make it to the start of those 13.1 miles feeling fit, healthy, and ready to run !!! Here is a link to the tips we shared with our previous HM Group for getting the most out of your training (covering topics such as cross training, recovery and what to do when things go wrong): healthunlocked.com/marathon... Although there may not be many physical starting arches this autumn, we can still live the dream πŸ˜€.

Share your thoughts - let us know if you have any other ideas, or if you have any questions - in the comments below.

β˜… Strava HUHM autumn 2020 club

We have now set up the Strava club for this Half Marathon group: HUHM autumn 2020. Joining the Strava club is optional, it’s certainly not necessary in order to take part in this HU group. However, if you already use Strava (or fancy giving it a try) you may like to join this club so we can follow each other and add our support and encouragement (and throw around some kudos) to each other’s activities. We set up a club for the previous HM groups and I, along with lots of others, found it really useful - it’s great to see how people are getting on and to share experiences on a run by run level.

So, if you’re on Strava and would like to join the club you can request to join using this link: strava.com/clubs/HUHMa20

If your HU name and your Strava name are very different, could you please message me here using HU chat to let me know who you are on Strava (or add a comment to this post letting me know you've submitted a request to join), as we will only accept people from this HU group. I have also added a β€˜who’s who?’ post to the Strava club so we can let everyone in the club know our HU alter ego if it isn’t obvious. We can then follow each other and spread the kudos!

β˜… Keep the comments coming!

Remember to save this post to see everyone’s comments; join in the discussions, let us know how you’re feeling and how you’re getting on in the comments below.

Have fun, take care, enjoy the runs and happy training everyone 😍

Is it too late to join the HM hopefuls..I would like to try to improve on last year's Monsal Trail time, since mine was cancelled this year?

I may even try to run it on the Trail, with Mr OF as back up, on his cycle.πŸ™‚

Oh fabulous! Definitely, definitely not too late to join. That would be a great thing to do after the disappointment earlier this year. I will add you to the list just now.

Thank you..it will keep me focussed ..and the support on the forum was what got me there last year.πŸ˜‰

Hi all!

There's a problem with offsite links at the moment, I have reported it to HU, bear with us!

In the meantime, if you press on the link (mobile) and select 'copy link text' you should be able to paste it into your browser address bar and find the website that way.

Otherwise, for the Strava club just copy the text below and paste into your browser address bar:

strava.com/clubs/HUHMa20

The problem has now been fixed 😊😊😊

Hi Linda, I have just signed up to the Strava HUHM autumn 2020 group. My Strava name (my name) is Fran Armstrong. I finally managed to break through my 10k ceiling today and ran 6.9miles - I ran a 1 hour virtual challenge with my running club and then had to keep going to get home. I am really frustrated that it wasn't 7 but I got in a tangle with my tech and thought I had done 7. Grrrr! Anyway, 7 mile gremlins crushed!!!!

Kiwipie profile image
KiwipieHalf Marathon in reply to RunUsagi

Well done! Isn’t it a great feeling when you’ve overcome and triumphed.

RunUsagi profile image
RunUsagiMarathon in reply to Kiwipie

Certainly is! I had really started to question if I could run further than 10k but onwards and upwards now.

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to RunUsagi

fabulous. Well and truly smashed those gremlins, and the lure of 7 miles remains to tempt you another day. πŸ‘

I’m afraid I did have a day on the couch yesterday. After some food experimentation with flaxseed it would seem that I’m allergic to them, nausea, bloating and chronic stomach pain.

On a positive note I’ve planned a 20K running route, which I can break down into smaller sections for my shorter runs and managed to keep most of it on trails and small country roads. Also wrote out my training plan using roseabi’s template. 11K easy run tomorrow. πŸ˜„ Hopefully my request to join Strava group has gone through.

Thank you for all the support and advice that’s been posted.

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Kiwipie

Uggh that sounds like a miserable reaction to the flax seeds hope you're feeling much better now. The only thing as exciting as a new plan is a new route - and you have both!

I have accepted your strava request - I think!

Is there an HU garmin group? Strava doesn't work well in my area. I tried it again on my run today, but it missed around 0.5k of the route, negatively affecting the distance and pace. (i can do without that!)

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Cantstopmenow

I'm not sure. I don't really use the social side of Garmin. However I do record all my runs via Garmin: I have it linked to automatically transfer the data from Garmin to my Strava account. That might work for you because all the data is recirded by Garmin.

Cantstopmenow profile image

Thanks for the post. I enjoyed reading the Spring tips and found it very useful. I also read Pete Magill's tips which you pasted a link for. I often feel bad for having two days off but he actually encourages it which was comforting! I have also just set up a workout on my Garmin for the intervals he suggests for my next speed outing. I found it interesting to read why it's important to train at different speeds. I am enjoying a bit of variety at present πŸ‘

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Celeriac

My first time through HM training, running at different speeds was a real eye opener and it definitely adds variety to the runs. I also found two rest days between runs very helpful, especially as the distance increases. In fact, I learned that having a week off doesn't hurt either - my legs feel refreshed and strong after a short break. All things that I would have been terrified of doing back in the days of C25K when I imagined an extra day off would be the start of a slippery slope πŸ˜€. Variety, discovery and all good fun!

Sorry I'm a bit late but please can I join the group too? I haven't been on for a couple of weeks so missed the posts. This is perfect for me if I can, I signed up a while ago for a virtual HM later in August but have been feeling like I've lost my running mojo recently probably caused by everything that's going on at the moment. I had a lot of running goals (and other things too) set for this year for my 50th birthday but everythings been cancelled so I'm trying to do things virtually on my own which is hard sometimes so being part of the group would be great. I use Garmin to track my runs but see someone has said it can be linked to Strava so I'm going to try and see if I can set something up :)

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Guinea70

Hi. Yes indeed, welcome to the group! How disappointing for you, it's easy to see why you might lose focus. But we're pretty good at helping with that πŸ˜€. Garmin links really well with Strava - once set up, all your activities will automatically be sent to your Strava account (with the exception of days with major events when it all gets a bit overloaded and can take hours!). Once you've set it up, click the link in the post and join our Strava club to see how everyone is getting on.

There are links to all the previous group posts at the bottom of this one, so you can catch up with anything you've missed.

Good luck. Here's to rediscovering your mojo and running a Half Marathon this year πŸ‘

Hi Linda I have requested to join the strava club and I operate under my Sunday best name of Helen ...., which of course has no resemblance to my HU codename of bubs1671 πŸ€”πŸ€—

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Bubs1671

Got you, accepted. 'Sunday best' name 🀣🀣🀣. Maybe add something to the 'who's who' post in Strava so you will be recognised by other members.

I have edited your post to take out your full name - anyone and everyone has access to posts on HU and I wasn't sure that you really wanted to be fully identifiable on here (by all means edit it back if you want), whereas the Strava club is restricted to just the people in this HM group.

AgingMetalHead profile image

Hi. I've just requested to join the Strava group. I've messaged you my name as clearly my Strava name won't bear any resemblance to my HU name! Thank you.

Welcome! I've added you to the Strava club (not that anyone will know it's you unless you add a comment to the who's who post over there πŸ˜€) and will add you to the list for the HU group too. Are you training for a particular event?

AgingMetalHead profile image
AgingMetalHead in reply to linda9389

Thank you! I do sometimes waffle on about what heavy metal I've been running to on my Strava runs so some may make the connection πŸ˜‚.

I'm entering the Chelmsford half in March so I've got plenty of time. I entered the Southend 10k back in October 2019 and by the time I ran it I had only run 10k twice (and maybe a 7km and 8km). I'd like to be more prepared this time even tho I did OK in the 10k.

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to AgingMetalHead

Great to have something to aim for. If you're at 18k already, maybe you could aim for a virtual HM this autumn to keep you on track πŸ˜€

Thanks for accepting me on strava. I run by myself and I think sharing other's running experiences will definitely be an extra motivation for me. You are quite an impressive bunch of runners! A bit about myself... I started running when I turned 50 just over a year ago - so still a newbie really. I managed to do a few parkruns in just under 30 minutes just before lockdown - this was a big achievement for me and I was gutted not to be able to consolidate this. Recently I've started doing longer runs and find I really love them. So thought I'd start training for a half marathon although I'm not signed up for anything at the moment. πŸ˜€

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to SmilingTortoise1

Wow, fantastic! What a lot of progress in such a short space of time. There are so many inspirational and supportive runners in this forum. I almost always run alone too - none of my friends run - and I find the support and encouragement here and on strava invaluable (it seems no-one else in my life is in the least bit impressed or interested πŸ€ͺ🀣)

Hi Roseabi and Linda9389, is it too late to join the group?

I did my first 10k a few weeks back and having repeated it a few times think that I need a new target. The event I have in mind is the Leeds HM in November (hopefully that's far enough in the future to stand a chance of happening) .

The Roseabi / HU HM plan looks like it offers the best chance for me to get the distance - I'm still in wonderment about getting to 10k and HM seems a long, long way, ;-)

So the target for this weekend is 11-12k, and I'm going to try and keep it nice and slow. (had a reasonable 5k this morning and will do something round the idea of pacing on Thursday).

:-)

linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to RunSkippyRun

Fabulous! I just put up the latest post - The Long Run πŸ˜€

Welcome to the group. You have lots of time to extend your distance - 21.1k is very doable and you've chosen a great plan. Follow roseabi and I to be notified of new posts, save the posts to be notified of contributions to the discussions. I will add you to the list now. if you use strava, you may want to join the Strava club to in order to see how everyone is getting on and to offer (and receive) kudos and encouragement! Good luck, enjoy the run at the weekend πŸ˜€
