How's the new normal feeling for everyone now? As we move towards our fifth week of restrictions, our household has found an unusual routine of sorts. I'm still working for the majority of my clients, so have had to stop trying to do every great fitness link I see postedπŸ€ͺ I'm still running and riding and doing my daily yoga - which I took into the garden yesterday (I felt rather self conscious but the reward of blue sky vistas as I peered over my shoulder or through my legs more than made up for that).

On my ride yesterday I saw an adult deer right in the middle of our town! She was a long way from any fields or woods and clearly utterly lost, but the two of us had the street to ourselves. I do hope she found her way back to safety.

Strange times, but if the forecast is as good for you as it is for us then we have a wonderful blue sky week to look forward to - there will be little positives to be found everywhere if we look carefully.

Let us know how you're all faring, and tell us all about your running plans and new found fitness creativity! It's great to share.

Happy running, reps, recovery, and resting!!!

Hello Linda. Still running here!

It's been a bit informal/haphazard as I've been running with the dog quite a bit and as it's been the school holidays, our routine has been "whatever" to an extent. But at least I/we've all been on the move in one form or another. However, back to it now - other half is working (and busy) in the study. Kids back "at school", so I'm kicking off a training plan to get me on the 10k route again as that's my next event, I hope, at Race for Life in July. Need some structure in my life! Oh, plus I do have work myself of course which needs to be done! Loving this Spring weather, wow, what a treat it is.

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Joster

Sounds like you're adapting family life well, although I daresay it takes quite a lot of effort. I've done ju-jus magic 10k plan three times! I really like the simplicity and progression of that plan. Enjoy yours 😊

Three 5 k runs for me last week. My left ankle is still complaining, so it will just have to take as long as necessary. The weather is looking good here too, but I have lots of work, so I'll either be running early or late most times.

I did quite a bit of gardening yesterday, so hope to sneak in some more this week. My youngest has suddenly become very enthusiastic. Are your garden centres open? Ours are, but I made sure we went early yesterday. I wouldn't want to pick up the virus there.

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to C3PO

You are very busy! Our garden centres are still closed in the UK, but there is a growing voice behind reopening them with strict social distancing measures in place, This is their prime season and lots of folk have the time to spend in their gardens so we'll see how that goes. Take care of the ankle - sending speedy healing vibes your way πŸ™‚

Oh deer! Hope she was OK. There's a big lawn over the road from us (a one-time golf pitch n putt) and we often see people doing yoga on there - I would feel pretty self-conscious meself! Good on you, it must be lovely to yoga in the fresh air 😍😎

Gosh, I just checked Strava and realised I did 4 runs last week! Including an "8 km Marathon" yesterday, in honour of the postponed Brighton Marathon. So that's the longest single run I've done since the Brighton Half on 23rd of February 😊😊😊

The Marathon weather in the end was a touch windier than I would have liked - beautiful sunny day though!

Happy running or rehabbing, Linda and all xxx

I am loving my running at the moment. I had a funny weekend where I felt unwell and spent it in bed, but then Sunday lunchtime suddenly felt normal again. Very odd.. but glad to be back on the running, yoga and workouts. Feeling very sad about colleagues who have lost staff members in all this... and colleagues who have it and taking a long time to get better. Have a good week too Linda and thanks for the place to share :)

2 weeks since my last run, but my knee has felt stronger day by day. It has survived 2x6k plus hill walks on consecutive days, so I tried my full range of exercises this morning including hops, jumps and lunges. If you can't jump, you can't run right? All seems fine; fingers crossed all day today though, hoping that no swelling or pain appears. Passed a bloke the other day who said I should give up running and get a bike. I won't repeat my response here for the sake of decency and good order! Nothing wrong with cycling....but I am a runner 😠.

You mean I'm not a threat any more πŸ˜‚. He was on a bike (with electrical assist) and doesn't run. One of those types who can't pass without a sarky comment....like "I don't find your running get up particularly alluring." I said that I was pleased for both our sakes! Just a bit of banter really, but it touches a nerve when you are catastrophising (which I can do) that an injury might be the one which stops me running. I need to get a grip, or more accurately, I just need a run. 😊

It is all sounding good for you! Perfect riding weather too.

My routine is changing slightly as I dared to leave the confines of Chez Floss yesterday for a run.

Tomorrow I shall venture out again, early...clearly the silly folk around me are late sleepers!

Yoga...indoor walking..strength and stamina work on the treadmill and elliptical continue.

Glorious sunny days make for lots of garden work and sowing and repotting as the tiny shoots get bigger.

Strange times indeed, but the closeness of our forum helps us all to know we are running this marathon together.

Thanks you xxx

Morning everyone. I’ve just found out that my close friend’s mum just tested positive. She is showing no symptoms though so hoping that continues. She is in a home and already dealing with Parkinson’s. All the residents are being regularly tested. I really hope she gets through this ok. It was still good to see my old friends last night on a zoom call. As for running, I had my sanity run in the woods yesterday on another new empty trail which connected back to the lake I was at last weekend. This was a heavier mileage week so I may dial back over the next couple of weeks. I was trying to get a 150k month goal done for a virtual race event. Just passed 160 yesterday. Might think about 200. Its easily doable I think. Hope you are all safe and able to get out when you can.

Hi

Walking the dog has taken priority over running these past weeks. However, I have managed either a 5k or a 10k run each week, but at a leisurely, more like lethargic, pace. I might do my own speed challenge unless there's another one on this forum next month.

I'd also like to get back into a routine with strength and flex. I've done nothing since the gym closed and I can feel the difference when out running.

I'm loving the warm weather and beautiful colours of spring. Keep safe and smiling 😊🌞

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Cantstopmenow

So long as you're getting out there for something, whether dog walking or running, at least you're getting some air and keeping the muscles going! It's hard finding new ways to juggle things isn't it., but hopefully even one run a week is giving you what you need - it'snot as if you have an impending race to need to be speedy for! I've been lucky - my OH is working from home so is walking the dog every day for his one exercise session which has left mine free for running or riding. I got one of the kids to do it the day he wanted to do something else. I haven't walked her for over 4 weeks now, maybe 5, whereas I normally do it every week day!

Spurred on by your post I set off at 7.30pm tonight to 'go for it' . I paused momentarily to take our escaped labrador home. I'm glad I went as I completed my fastest 5k and my fastest 1k on the final 1k home. Maybe a little break from the usual runs doesn't do any harm. Glad you have settled into a new routine πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘ x

Sounds like you have a great routine going there Linda.

I am still getting out for a run 3 times a week, I aim for one of them to be 10km or more but I’m not beating myself up if I don’t do that.

I am still working from home and that is not likely to change so I mix things up by doing some runs on a morning and others on an evening.

The garden is a great escape from the lockdown in the house so I have been doing lots out there.

Take care x

I had planned to retire from my role in the NHS (management not clinical) at the end of March but have stayed on for this month a couple of days a week to try to ease the pressure a bit on those at the front end. I generally work from home most of the time anyway so not a big change. I am though doing a 30 minute workout 4 days a week (2upper and 2 lower body), sharing the twice daily dog walks with OH and sneaking 2 runs a week on non workout days - previously a 5k midweek and 10k at weekend, now switching to 10k midweek (Thursday this week for my 2nd C25k runniversary) and a virtual parkrun on Saturday incorporating the 1k speed challenge. Then there’s the gardening πŸ˜ƒ

Hi all

Not too much running going on here, but did get out twice last week Inc my 1st sub 30 5k on Sat morning on my "not a parkrun "seafront route ! didn't see anyone i knew but waved at quite a few runners 😊Did a mini virtual "Tuesday Nighters" club followed by our other club bootcamp which was broadcast mon/tue/weds last week with coach Stu 😊

Apart from that just dog walking and gardening and have just finished a wooden planter made from neighbours pallet that was on his front lawn! Used a handsaw to chop it up so good arm exercises! 😊

On the 26th april our off rd club were going to do "walk the wight "route as London marathon cancelled so we will all be doing a run virtually from where we live and posting results 😊so will try for a longer run than 5k! Very out of practice!

Hiya Linda, I keep looking at the garden and thinking what a nice place it would be for yoga...one day when I can remember enough moves!

It was a strange, frustrating week as my legs had nothing in them, and as for my daily steps...they've been shocking 😱!! BUT I have to remember how bad they used to feel after 10k, and I've now recovered better after 21k 😁

By Saturday my legs told me they were ready to burn some tarmac and we got a good non-parkrun time in, coming in at under 29 minutes on a much hillier route than our normal pancake. I did a faster 1km than is on the speed challenge but it's not on the same route...ah well. Yesterday, they were a bit knackered again (am I allowed to say that?!) so 10km wasn't happening. Our twice weekly 'School Run' this morning and I was more than happy to go at eldest kitten's pace. Next weekend they'll be fine I'm sure and I'm looking forward to a new routine of 'whatever'!

And we have our medals, I forgot to take it off when Ocado came but thankfully he was tall and 2 metres away, so it was probably too low down to notice! 🀣

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon

Fabulous. 21km and you expect to just be able to run as normal. Love it πŸ˜‚. The HM training must've helped your speed too, nice bonus. I confess I'm dreading my speed attempt tomorrow. Hi linda9389 and friends. My days are all very very similar, but I feel very fortunate with our situation and I’m certainly not complaining. ❀️ I’ve morphed back into being a full time mum with all the kids back living here. The house is full again. (We’d thought about selling up last year - thank goodness we didn’t!) πŸ‘

By day, Mr Cheeky and 2 of the kids are locked away in their various rooms working, and my oldest daughter and her little family are in the annexe. The garden is our meeting place for a cuppa and a baby cuddle! She brings him outside, and it’s no coincidence that the β€œworkers” feel the need to take a tea break!! πŸ’™ In the evenings we all catch up, eat whatever I’ve conjured up and I do my jigsaw! πŸ€“

I’ve been running every other day - including a 10k once a week, doing yoga, dog walking, gardening and tons of cooking. πŸ˜€

So that’s it. πŸ˜€ I’m loving reading about how my VRBs are doing - and there are some amazing achievements out there. πŸŽ‰βοΈπŸ‘

Well done keeping up a great running routine with all those people to look after. I can only imagine your food bills! Mine have rocketed - although there is no one extra at home, having them home all day plus the fact everyone needs dinner every night rather than once or twice, has made a huge difference. Lovely having them all home and safe though. All that 'busy' makes me appreciate the alone time of my runs more than ever and I bet you do too 😍

Apparently animals are venturing more and more onto streets now that the humans have left. No noise, no pollution. The way it was πŸ™‚

I’m still running every other day, doing a weekly zoom Pilates class and exercises every other day. Gardening galore so I’m in my element really. Our local garden nursery delivers so I can still get compost etc so I’m a very happy bunny!

We’re keeping in regular contact with family and friends and everyone in our circle sounds safe and well which is a huge relief, especially for my 86 year-old mum. We had a bit of a drama last week with my mum’s phone (ie it didn’t work) and as that was our only way of contact it was a bit worrying but we got it all sorted and she’s now in back in full communication mode πŸ™‚

I’m trying to stick to as regular a routine as possible and that includes four nights a week alcohol-free. The first week of lockdown I carried on drinking and then I realised I wasn’t sleeping so well and it was affecting my running so I went back to my normal routine again. Alcohol-free gin is the way to go! Taste delicious πŸ˜‹ Ooops I forgot to admit to also having a few ice cold beers after a day working in the garden 🍺 but I don’t really consider beer as proper alcohol 🀣 Decker how are you getting on with the beer?

I’m starting to build up distance again slowly but as I’m not training I love these slow, languid runs. I feel as if I’m on a permanent holiday with them 😎

The 1st couple of weeks or so of lockdown I guess I treated like a holiday, lay ins, too much eating, more regular drinking and only a couple of runs a week whenever I fancied...it was what I needed at the time but as I've got used to being home I decided it was time to bring back some structure.

I feel more settled now I'm into the old routine, 3 runs a week including 1 longer one (though I'm not beating myself up about how long). Healthier eating through the week with treats and drinks at the weekend.

Gives me something to look forward to at the weekend rather than all days being the same. And I must admit while life in general is so unusual getting a bit of the old routine back is making me feel more settled πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ˜Š

A seal in a canal? Wow! That can't happen very often? I'm sure a lot of us can to relate to what you're saying here - well done for only taking a short 'holiday' before coming back to such a positive routine 😊

You're absolutely right Linda, it probably never happens at all as it wasn't a canal at all πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ...it was the River Dee πŸ˜†

I feel a bit happier now ... hopefully it made it's way back up the estuary and out to find it's mates 😍

Oh I'm sure it did, I googled it when I got home and it seems it's not an uncommon occurrence along that stretch at certain times of the year...all is right with world 😊

Bad choice of words right now...but the seal world is good πŸ˜πŸ‘

I took to the garden for a bit of yoga and meditation a few days ago, which looks a lot like napping 🀫😁. My family thought I was a bit crazy though. Whatever Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―

I do still enjoy a run, but I fear the worst. my dad has asthma, and yet not serious, i may have to stop my daily run outside πŸ₯Ί

Sounds like you need the yoga/meditation/nap with that sort of stress to deal with. Could you maybe try running extra early or extra late, see if that makes you feel less fearful? But if not, it possibly isn't worth going out to run. Garden running or other indoor/garden exercise may be better to fill the gap - lots of ideas over on the strength & flex forum. Finding peace of mind is important just now - good luck 😊
