Hi all!

How have you been getting on with your training? Tell us all about it ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

As many of you know, I have been rehabilitating a little Achilles tendinopathy recently. This week it had improved enough that I felt able to go on my first hilly run for a while! I went on one of my very favourite routes around Brighton & Hove, taking in the lovely Queens Park pond on the way.

Have you been exploring new areas? Or getting a renewed appreciation of your favourite haunts?

Happy running, cross-training, resting, and exploring everyone!!!

roseabi xx

10 miles in HM training today with my running buddy. Lovely run along the Exe Estuary. It was hot and hard work - definitely great to have someone to help with encouragement at the end. We are practising our fuelling strategy - I have Tailwind in my hydration vest and took SIS gels at 6 and 12k ... felt pretty good. Beginning to feel this is possible! 5 weeks until race day ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Good luck to everyone training... ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช

Iโ€™ve been running/walking the Camel estuary this last week, much nicer than swimming across it! I still find it all a struggle but there have been a few times when over 3k has felt almost relaxed...emphasis on the almost!! I do intend on achieving it but I do know Iโ€™m not as advanced in my running that Iโ€™d really like.

5 weeks sounds terrifying!! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿคฌ๐Ÿฅด๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

I know the feeling, I am so behind with things at the moment. We can do it!!!! xxxx

I did a 10 miler on Saturday which was a running club/Parkrun combo route. Nice to mix up some familiar territories. It felt really tough. Afterwards I saw I was in HR zone 5 most of the time. Monday was an easy 5k in HR zone 3 and tonight I did 6.5 miles also in HR zone 5 but it was faster and felt much easier.

I definitely run better in the evenings which is a problem as the HM I am thinking of is of course in the morning.

Changing the subject, my other current problem is poomergencies. It had been more under control recently but it's getting bad. I may have to start taking Imodium again before runs and lay off the apples. Sorry, probably too much information. I need to check the WC provision on the HM route...

Snuffy_T profile image
Snuffy_THalf Marathon in reply to Langley-Loper

I feel your pain in regard to the poomergencies, the first time it happened to me I only just made it too the loo. Not funny!

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to Langley-Loper

Race timings usually aren't that great, such a pain! xxx

in reply to Langley-Loper

If youโ€™ve run 6.5 miles easily in zone 5, do you think Your zones might need adjusting? You shouldnโ€™t be able to hold a conversation in zone 5 and it shouldnโ€™t feel easy. The 220-age formula is wildly inaccurate and far too low. I was advised to take my highest hr from my runs, ones when I really had been flat out, and set that as max hr.

Langley-Loper profile image
Langley-LoperHalf Marathon in reply to

I had indeed used the guideline of 220-age=170 for my max. Have updated to 195 now to see what effect that will have on the analysis of my next run. 195 was the highest value from my tough run, yesterday's more comfortable was 192 so not a lot different. Maybe I'll just run to how I feel and sod the statistics!

in reply to Langley-Loper

linda9389 gave me this link. It was much more realistic for me and put me at 165bpm. I put it up a bit more, to 171, which is approaching my max hr from runs last year (I peaked at 183 on one run! which is way above what the 220-age system would consider Safe for my age). Iโ€™ve been tweaking it for weeks through this hr zone based training and feel pretty comfortable with where it is now: zones 1&2 are possible to run without being stupidly slow, and zone 5 is a stretch but doable, but has me out of breath. I think sod the statistics is probably the best approach! And one I would adopt myself if my HM training plan wasnโ€™t so darned effective ๐Ÿ˜Š

That park looks lovely, I've never been. it looks lush. I've only been doing short runs at the moment, 5 km. So I just plod along the same routes, but its always interesting along the coast. Once I have got the Brighton tri out the way, I will be building up to long runs again. I am mainly concentrating on swimming as I know I can do the run, its only 2.5km, but the sea swim is a challenge for me. I have signed up to do a mince pie 10 mile race around the downs in December, so I will be heading off for some hilly runs over the downs soonish...!

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to Snuffy_T

It's a gorgeous little park - very steep though!

I am finding the sea swimming a bit challenging too! Not least because the sea has been pretty much unswimmable for the past couple of weeks ๐Ÿ˜„ We'll get there...

That mince pie thing sounds great!!

This is my first time posting here. I've just completed 14k as part of my training for my first HM. The furthest I've ever gone, last year is 18k, which I progressed to after completing C25k which I began on 2nd September 2018.

I like running alone, and so I can do my HM whenever I like, but my aim is October 7th this year.

Looking forward to reading your tips and progress :)

Well done peeps. Very positive stuff ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘

Training going well, apart from blisters and nails but I had a trouble-free dash last night, so hopefully the worst is over.

Strength today, and I thinks itโ€™s yoga on the agenda.

Got incoming family today ๐Ÿ˜ณ so itโ€™s going to be full on. My niece is hoping that we can run together. I hope so ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

We all went out for a meal afterwards ๐Ÿ˜‹

Oh I did ๐Ÿ˜. One of my frequent visitors contacted me last bank holiday weekend hoping Iโ€™d put up him and all his equine friends I politely declined ๐Ÿ™‚

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to misswobble

LOL!

Iโ€™m glad your Achilles problem is getting better Abi.

My progress is in my posts. I donโ€™t get the long runs everyone else is doing because of the slow pace hr zone training. My longest run yet is coming up this Sunday and is only 1.5 hours- all in zones 1&2, so I doubt I will top 10k. After my recent 10+ mile run (an extension of that dayโ€™s training run) I know the training is working and I can do the distance, despite being time rather than distance based, so Iโ€™ve stopped worrying. Greetings roseabi, All good here in shortland. Training going well, touch wood. Stratford 10k in 2 weeks fits in nicely ready for Rugby HM end of October. Got a new pair of Saucony's as they were ยฃ30 off retail and i couldn't resist. Enjoy your running everyone.

MrFox001 profile image

Not exactly i'm not a "Matchy Matchy" sort of person. The shorts are black to better show off the Paleness of the legs. The Saucs are my one nod towards Colour there this bright blue with orange. I usually match with any old rock band tea shirt except on a HM when i do match with a Blue Time to Run top. Oh and White Falke Socks rolled down to the ankle of course. Fashion Icon or What. LOL.

Training in full flow Abi ๐Ÿ˜€

Did a 10k Training run on Sunday and (the HM training plan is obviously working!) got a PB for just about everything, from 10k, to 5k (under 30 mins, finally ๐Ÿ˜Ž), right down to 1k!!

Then after two successive golf days was out this morning for a first session with my running coach (!), working on speed and strength.

Planning another long run at weekend (maybe HM distance), then easing off ahead of next 10k race on Sunday 1st.

Ha! I went for my first "long" run over 10k since my last HM in May last weekend (20k) and nearly died! :-) Have signed-up for an official HM in mid October to try to kick my own butt into running-up the training miles again! (Running 2-3 x 5k on a tradmill each week does not cut the mustard!)

Well Iโ€™ve slid backwards the last couple of weeks. Only managed 2 runs a week and none have been brilliant.

Todayโ€™s was a test run for my hydration vest and it was an epic fail. Couldnt get the bitedown valve to work, Iโ€™d forgotten to drink my SIS drink before I went and Iโ€™d also had a broken nights sleep and felt headachy and out of sorts all day yesterday. As I was testing it I was doing 6 min run/1 min walk and drinking in the walks.

Couldnโ€™t get anything out the first time even though it has worked before I left home. 2nd walk I managed a tiny dribble after Iโ€™d strained my neck.3rd run I ended up holding the tube above my head and managed to drink a bit more and the last one I just took the mouthpiece off and drank from the tube. My hip was niggling after first 2k. And my tummy was threatening a Radcliffe moment so I turned for home. Only managed 4K and couldnโ€™t even force myself to round it up to 5. Good job I havenโ€™t got a race booked.

Iโ€™m writing that one off as โ€œ at least it was a runโ€ and going to fiddle with this hydration tube till I get it right.

But apart from that the vest is a success.

Glad you are on the mend :) Hope you have a full recovery :)

I don't have much to contribute to this section usually but with the Lejeune HM coming up fast, I've got a few butterflies and just hoping I can finish the course. Going out running the usual routes - flat Park, hilly Compound, Big Hill route - but doing extra laps and distances. For me, a HM is really pushing things so I'm hoping I do well enough in this one to feel good about it and feel I have done the best I can.

So, wishing us both happy miles in our future RA :)
