Hi everybody!

Welcome to a new week, and a new weekly chat board 😊😊😊

As I'm sure you know, it was the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing last week. I was thinking that, although the motivation of the project was questionable, and the financial and human costs pretty terrible, it is amazing to contemplate the thrill of going beyond your biggest achievements!!

It also reminded me about the Let's Run Around the Moon distance challenge we did last year, and that the next Speed Challenge is due to start next week. I was wondering:

As the weather for many of us is pretty warm just now, might it be a good idea to postpone the Speed Challenge until the Autumn, and hold another Distance Challenge instead? I'll put up a poll too 😊

Edit: poll is here - healthunlocked.com/marathon...

ANYWAY πŸ˜„

Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion!

If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.

Happy running!

It's supposed to get extremely warm this week...

I hit my 30 miles last week with a 9 / 17 and 4.5 so I'm happy. Not sure yet what this week will bring so will play it by ear.

We've got Paul's mum coming to stay next week so that may impact my running opportunities so I guess this week will be key.

Massage Weds, I'm interested to see if there are any warning signs after my longer runs 🀞🏻 it's always a great indicator if I'm looking after my body well.

You are an inspiration Jo, such a strong, motivated, imaginative runner x

Not looking forward to the heat this week; will be back on the treadmill for me for a 4.5miles and 2 miles before my 2nd ever 10k in Regents Park on Sunday morning - let’s hope it’s cooled down by then!

Hit 10.4 miles last week which is really exciting, and managed a 5.5 mile run

Hi allπŸ˜ƒπŸ‘

Still following my Nike marathon/half marathon training plan, and have done the first fitness workout, which is incorporated into it. Not easy while holding the phone in my hand and earplugs in my ear πŸ€¨πŸ€”β˜ΊοΈ Not sure how else to do it πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I’m earning WW wellness wins to get me a set of Bluetooth earphone thingies. I did it in a fashion, but it was far too, quick going from one move to another 😁😀.

Ok after last week’s hill race. I was fine. I thought my legs might ache but nope πŸ˜ƒ. I did fast intervals yesterday and tomorrow is speed test day, after which the plan may or may not get tweaked. Enjoying the app, especially the coached runs I’ve got a 15k this week i think πŸ€”

Back at the skin specialist tomorrow to review my biopsy result

Have a good week everyone

I can remember being in junior school for destination moon All the boys were obsessed by it πŸ™‚. Our tiny school hall was rammed with kids all watching the big telly that got wheeled out for special occasions I wasn’t enthralled but I felt the sense of occasion and the buzz of excitement it induced πŸš€.

First week of the school holidays for me πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

Did 10 miles off road yesterday with the group I'm training with for Beachy Head which I absolutely loved. After the 4 mile cross country club championship race (2 laps of grass, a ploughed field 😦 and through woods) on Saturday my legs are really feeling it so I'll have to sit out tonight's track Sprint Eliminator ☹️ It's a really fun handicapped event but I'll be taking my son along so I'll still get to watch πŸ˜πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

Am still ticking along nicely on my HM plan, aka the β€œmodified abiplan”. One of my main modifications (apart from playing golf every other day!) is to work in my monthly 10k races, and allow for a bit of tapering before each. So plan is to extend the long run to about 15-16k, before winding down ahead of the Barry Island 10k (a week Sunday). With the forecasted heat wave, am going to have to get out very early indeed to do that sort of distance!

Last week was great - was in holidays and got 3 wonderful runs in. Back to work today and on-call this weekend so back to trying to figure out how to juggle my runs and work schedule. Add in the heat wave we’re going into - here’s hoping I get all 3 runs in. Still planning for an early morning drive to the lake on Friday to get my long trail run in 🀞

After 5 weeks in the boot I'm having a go at walking without it (though still wearing it for work and the stiff soled shoe at home). Starting today I'm doing a modified C25K, subbing walking for running and resting for walking. Hoping to only need 2 sessions of each week, so if all goes to plan, by the time I go back to the fracture clinic I will be walking 30 minutes at a reasonable pace. I've remembered I have a 10k race on 7th Dec which I entered after injuring my foot but it seemed yonks away at the time. Counting the weeks, if I can start running after my appt on 22nd August, I will almost have time to do C25K immediately followed by Ju-Ju's magic 10 plan with the 10k being done on 7th Dec. Wouldn't be a PB, and I'm not even sure it will all go to plan, but it's something to aim for.

I've cycled 275k so far this month and done all sorts of chair based exercises too 😍. Haven't persuaded myself to go for a swim though πŸ€”

Your determination along with finding new ways to still move and train whilst injured is inspirational. You can do anything, that 10k will be acheived, and with all the cross training now you might do better than you think. X

Thank you so much for this. I don't really feel deserving of the comment, but I do love it 😍

In actual fact I'm whiny, grumpy and utterly fed up!

But I guess I am determined - thank goodness or I'd be a huge fat blob on the sofa by the time this is fully fixed! But I think most of us here are very determined ... I don't read many 'slacking off' posts, so I don't want to be the one to let the side down :)

The fact you are whiny, grumpy and fed up (all justified too!) Just goes to show how inspiring you are. You could have said fck it but instead you have found alternate options and that is worth celebrating! And you are still on this site cheering others on too. πŸ₯°πŸ˜Š definitely no letting the side down here! Xx

Seeking advice: just got the schedule for the new job I’ve taken on and it’s pretty intense... trying to work out my HM plan. I did try and say I might nit be able to do this project as I want to do a HM but that didnt seem to wash... anyway I wondered when training, is it important to do a certain mileage per week or is it potentially ok to run regularly increasing ling runs slightly but maybe not managing 3 runs a week or having gaps?

Becky1606 profile image
Becky1606Half Marathon in reply to Couchpotato2

My work schedule is also not

Half marathon friendly, I leave the house at 7:45am and am not back most nights until 8, by which point I’m hungry and shattered! I’m really trying with the 3 runs and did 3 last week, but if i can only fit 2 in I make sure i do a long run (currently up to 6.5 miles) and a run from 3.1-5 miles, leaving out my short 2 miler x

Couchpotato2 profile image
Couchpotato2Marathon in reply to Becky1606

Yes that’s what I was thinking of doing. Have very similar times to you. Was going to have a run yesterday when i got baxk at 8 but someone was eating fish and chips on the platform and that was it, had to have food ...

GoGo_JoJo profile image

I don't know if it's recommended but it's what I did as some weeks I just can't do 3 with work etc.

So long as you keep doing what you can and slowly increase your longest run, even if that's maybe once a fortnight, you'll get there. If you don't have the pressure of an event date it's easier.

Couchpotato2 profile image

Yes it’s just hard to get 3 in at the moment and also the heat, bleurg. I need to sit down witg a calendar as there is an end of October one that looks good and fits in with my calendar but need to see if it works x

Hi all

Lots of runs last week;mon/wed/thurs eves and fri/sat/sun morning so bit of an easier week to come I reckon ! Am marshalling our clubs 10mile race again in Sunday (where I 1st met C3PO back in 2017!) and hoping to catch the end of the dash and splash beach race afterwards (though won't be there in time to join inπŸ˜•)

My workmate has bought me a very early birthday present of a place for us both in a nightime trail HM (but 14 miles! ) in November!! Could be interesting!!πŸ˜‚

Something's happened these last couple of weeks and after really struggling and missing loads of runs from my plan somehow running is becoming fun again. I credit a lot of this to the really lovely people at the running club I run with on a Wednesday night, I had to force myself to make the effort to go a couple of times and now I'm finding I'm actually looking forward to it through the week and especially on a Monday when I start the week with a run. I also credit a tiny bit to colouring the cells on my spreadsheet in green when I've run and keeping a track of longest runs/total miles each week.

About to enter a 10k for the second weekend in August, which is the same course as the first ever 10k I did last November. I'm probably no faster now than I was then, but what does it matter if it's still fun!

I’m following a bit of a DIY HM plan, I have to be honest! I can’t run an actual HM race this autumn as I’d hoped - but it’s for a great reason. Our oldest daughter is due to have our first grandchild in September, so running will need to flexible round that time. ❀️

So I’m currently focusing on sneaking up my mileage every couple of weeks or so, rather like the Magic 10. I’m hoping it’s cool enough to run 18k next week 🀞 If not, I’ll do it the week after, it doesn’t matter. Either way, I’ll keep running. Early morning trails are my favourite in this weather, just trotting along happily. There’s no point (or ability in my case) to go for PBs at the moment. πŸ₯΅ Yesterday I was good and did JogRunSprint. Felt righteous afterwards! πŸ’ͺ

So my upcoming races are the Severn Bridge 10k next month and the GSR in October, along with some VRB PR meetups! How wonderful. ❀️

Hey all. I'm still following my Polar heartrate plan for my marathon but I've also adapted my longer runs so they are set to reach distance and not just time. I want to run 20miles/30k before my marathon although I will listen to the advice of not running longer than and half hours in training. I have upped my max heartrate though and this has upped the range of the zones I run in so I have possibly been running a little too slowly in training. It has helped my endurance and my fitness so hopefully I can now run that bit faster in a lower zone! It still blows my mind really that I am going to run a Marathon! But I am! I need to stop worrying about time and focus on the distance though so this week I will try to stay in my heartzones in this heat and run 13 miles on Sunday for my long run. Ideally finishing thinking half way and I can run that again lol! πŸ€£πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ xx

Hi Claire. That's a useful guide! I'm currently around 3 hours. I'm almost at my target distance so probably wouldn't have gone over 3.5 but it's useful to be aware of this.

I can recall seeing the Saturn Rocket at Kennedy Space Centre and it was so massive. Just the sheer scale of the thing leaving Earth was hard to imagine.

The running has been going well. I had a shorter 12k trail race this last weekend which was a lot of fun with some friends. The weather has been stifling, hot and humid. It finally broke yesterday and I went for a run in spite of it being a rest day. πŸ™‚ I have been trying to maintain the strength body work too on off days. Weight training is something I hate doing but the body exercises seem to be easier to do on the spot when I have a moment. Been doing more cycling to and from runs. It is slow going. My bike is an old heavy mountain bike so I may be looking for something a bit more lightweight soon. Happy trails friends!

Snuffy_T profile image
Snuffy_THalf Marathon in reply to Decker

The Kennedy space station is intead massive, I went a few years ago and was quite humbled by it.

You wont regret getting a lighter bike. I used to ride my husband's mountain bike which is quite heavy. I bought a second hand road bike recently, I love it, nice and light really responsive, its fab . It's a different riding position, so my neck gets a bit sore, but I am getting used to it as its early days .

Decker profile image

The scale of the place is incredible isn’t it? Yes I’m looking for a secondhand road or hybrid bike too. I had a road bike as a teen and loved it.

Same, that was a few decades ago now, things have come on a bit now! I got an Allez sport, which is about 6 years old. I went to a local bike charity place to get it, was great as I could ride a few different bikes around until I found one which is right for me.

Just ticking along. My work routine has changed slightly so I am having to readjust. No HM plan for me though so I'm keeping ticking over with the long run no more than 10k which suits me very well in this warmer climate.

I"m still hanging around on the periphery of this forum, healing this niggly piriformis is taking a long old time but I can run 5k without too much irritation now. Went to see the physio again on Monday and he has given me a new exercise to do so hoping that will speed up my recovery. Would love to sign up for a 10k race (forget the HMs for now) but don't feel ready to commit yet. If all goes well over the next couple of weeks maybe I'll book one for September.

Was planning a run for tomorrow evening but ridiculous temperatures forecast so may just jump in the sea instead!
