The Gift of Running - part 1

So as I am sure I have mentioned before, I got an entry into the Derby Half Marathon as a Christmas present from my 2 daughters. I started my training sort of in January, just trying to gradually increase my distance and picked up an injury meaning I had big gaps in my running in February and part of March.

March saw me nearly give up on the idea of running the Half Marathon as I struggled to string a good run together to make even a 5k.

So it was with delight that the day after my 55th birthday I managed my 2nd 10k run of the year - the first being mid January.

I suddenly thought that maybe, just maybe I could still have time to string enough training runs together to make the Half Marathon.

So my plan was hatched.

The next week instead of consolidating my 10k I pushed myself up to 12k and a week later 13k. After a bit of foreign travel I came back with 14k and kept going until 2 weeks ago I did 19k.

To be honest the last few k of that run felt more like running through treacle than anything constituting a run but it was good enough - it should get me to the finish line in one piece - which is the primary objective.

As I write this it is the night before the big day. Feelings of excitement and nerves a mixture of Christmas and pre exam butterflies!

Derby is I am told a relatively small event last year around 2600 entrants slightly more than the 300-400 of my parkrun that I have now done twice but nowhere near the jaw dropping numbers of some events.

Logistics sorted for getting there, kit all ready with number tagged neatly to the shirt, headphones fully charged, playlist loaded - I just need a good night's sleep, for my alarm to wake me up, my bowl of pre run porridge and I am good to go. Gulp! πŸ˜‰

To be continued ...
