Half Marathon Plan: Here we go!!! 😁

My weekend plans went a bit Pete Tong, and I'm travelling home this morning. When I get back I'll be doing the FIRST RUN OF THE PLAN!!!

Will update later 😊

Good luck to everyone starting off today, and to those who've already started - how's it going?

I've made a rough list of who I think is taking part here:

docs.google.com/spreadsheet...

Anyone I've missed?

roseabi xx

EDIT:

I got out for my run - 8K Long Run. It was blustery along the sea front with a testing head wind - and it started raining just before I finished, and I got pretty wet! πŸ˜‚ I'm sure there'll be plenty more of that to come! 😊😊😊 Cross training tomorrow...

I have set up a Strava Club (HUHM) for us here:

strava.com/clubs/huhm

PLEASE HIT THE 'REQUEST TO JOIN' BUTTON 😊

Of course you don't have to join (or be on Strava) if you don't want to, though 😊

After some more very helpful comments from Linda I have made a small change to the lunge-deadlift exercise in my strength circuits here:

docs.google.com/document/d/...

Highlighted in bold face for now.

Deux pie bavards to everyone! 😊😊😊

Ha ha - guess what race number I was given at Crowborough 10k - oh yes, no 13! Lucky I'm not superstitious! πŸ˜‚

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to MutleyShuffle

Ugh. I just couldn't! It's so irrational. For years I have been counting out grapes (children's lunchboxes), blueberries (my youghurt), squirts of hair conditioner .... the list is endless and all encompassing, just to make sure I never accidentally make 13.

I restrict myself to just one or two (maybe half a dozen!) superstitions, but stick with them religiously. The only conversations I have on solo runs are when I wish lone magpies the time of day (I learnt it in French so we used to be covered when we were travelling .. seeing deux pie bavards was always a moment to celebrate

:D ). I am clearly bonkers :D

By the way we found a lone injured magpie when walking our dogs in the woods recently. Took him to the local wildlife sanctuary... I wonder if he made it? Poor thing, he was all fluffy and cute close-up, not how you imagine a magpie to be!

Good morning Mr Magpie..how are you today... Where is Mrs Magpie..has she just flown away ?

Then spit, just a little, discreetly over your little finger:)

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Oldfloss

Yes, yes, yes! Dog walks and runs can be so stressful depending on the time of year - sometimes they're always in groups, other times they are all singletons :( And the ones I see are all Mr Magpie too :D :D :D

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministrator in reply to linda9389

You and I would get on really well!!

Bowing to the new moon...never look at it through glass... pass the salt..pass the sorrow... Yep, having my Nan and my Great Gran in the family home meant I grew up with all the sayings and superstition... :)

I love it!

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Oldfloss

Haha! I'm happy not to be the only one. New shoes on the table and passing on the stairs both send me into a panic, but 13 (anywhere, anyhow) and the magpies are my main worries :D

It amazes me that so many people just don't care :D :D :D

Sqkr profile image
SqkrHalf Marathon in reply to linda9389

We used to have a teddybear come to dinner with us quite often when I was growing up, because of the whole 13 round a table thing πŸ˜‚ But yes! I'll definitely be doing some bits once life hopefully settles down in the new year, so count me in as a 13.5, or a 14 πŸ‘

I always salute and verbally greet magpies.

I've now completed cycle 1, and started cycle 2 with a PB at parkrun this Saturday! So far, definitely so good :)

Having had a fairly fixed routine until now, I find I'm loving the variety of the 9 day cycle - it really adds to the sense of adventure and feeling of something new. Swimming and strength work are completely new to my routine but already I feel a difference (I did do a sort of cycle 0, trying things out, so I've done 2 weeks of this extra training now). Calculating different paces, putting workouts into Garmin and trying to achieve different paces has also been a new approach for me. I can see it will be hugely beneficial in a HM to intuitively understand my pacing by feel and practice as much as by looking at my watch and trying to do calculations on the run.

Right now I feel incredibly positive and boosted by starting this training, and it will only get better with more lovely people involved.

Good luck everybody - we can, and will do this :)

Many thanks roseabi x

Oh and I've also reached my minimum fundraising target for Mind, so I can stop worrying about that as well :)

HoagyMHalf Marathon

Well off we go :)

Dusted the treadmill off this afternoon and did my "Easy 5k" which is my W1D1. Ended up doing a bit more, very slow, ran for 3.75km in 45 mins.

BTW For those following me on Strava, you won't see it on there as I managed to set up Strava wrongly. But trust me, I did do a run, honest :)

My immediate challenge is getting back up to 10k after running only twice in the last two months (gremlins/mojo/whatever). My last run before the layoff was 17km (my longest run to date), so I know I can do it - it's just getting back onto it again and getting those running muscles back into shape.

So my version of the "Abi Plan" means my long runs this week start at 7k (on Wed), then up to 10k by Xmas, 15k by end Jan, and 20k by end Feb, ready for the HM in mid-March.

But today was a good start - found it tough of course after such a long lay off, but took it steady, my HR stayed well under control, and I feel confident about doing the 7k on Wednesday. May even venture outside into the "weather" on that day, who knows? ;)

And thanks again to Abi for doing this, and for everyone else for taking part, I definitely need this extra motivation right now!

Thank you! xx It was fun 😊

I was hoping to do my run from the MIL's in Kidderminster this morning, but it was chucking it down! I don't mind getting wet, but I thought about the soggy clothes that would sit in the car for hours, and the general fussing of elderly relatives - and decided to wait til I got home. A pity really, it would have been cool 😊

I’ve started too, with my 15k long run. Bit of a niggling knee after, but it does after all my long runs, so hopefully it will continue settling down again to order after a non-run day!

Can I come out to play as well please Miss? :)

I started the 9 day plan on Nov 18th (will complete C2 on Wednesday) and loving the flexibility, I printed off a hard copy and tick off each session as I complete it.

I am thinking of doing the Hampton Court HM on March 17th but with a 2 week holiday (no running allowed) in January I'm not sure I can get myself race ready in time. Either way, I definitely want to do the Denbies Bacchus HM but that's not until September.

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Teri73

I've got a 2 week break in Jan too! Hampton court looks like a really nice one but not for this year for me as mine is booked for the following week :D Good luck!

Teri73 profile image
Teri73 in reply to linda9389

Oooh my calves feel sore just at the thought of trying to do 2 HMs a week apart! :( Since completing C25K I have even greater respect for people who run marathons and am totally in awe of anyone who runs multiple marathons in the same week. Utterly bonkers but RESPECT!

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to Teri73

Absolutely - welcome! And how lovely to have another 9-dayer 😊😊😊

You are pretty much in the same boat as Linda - did you have a look at her plan?

Teri73 profile image
Teri73 in reply to roseabi

Yes, I did thanks Abi. I will be following something very similar except I have not scheduled my daily runs for each week, to keep maximum flexibility I have printed off the top section and pencilled in the dates I expect to start each cycle down the left. That way I can choose each session from those left in the current cycle according to how I feel and how much time I have, then the chart receives a big tick when I get back. Loving it so far, will post a photo of my chart when I complete C2 in a couple of days.

Not sure whether I count for this or not. I started today and am runnig x3 per week until my HM on 3rd March. I am folliwng the same interval/tempo - easy - long run as per your 7-day cycle (albeit with slight variations on distance given the shortened plan). I am doing cross training, but mostly push ups with walking and cycling.

If this is allowed please put me on the spreadsheet.
