Hello!

Welcome to a marvellous new Monday!!

Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion ๐Ÿ˜Š

If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.

I was pleased to finally get out for my first post-marathon run on Friday. I was huffing and puffing, and feeling unfit, but Strava told me I was actually going quite fast! For me. ๐Ÿ˜Š But then someone on Strava commented: "Good recovery run!". Humph.

Are you feeling a bit sluggish, or as if you're born to run? Maybe somewhere in between? ๐Ÿ˜Š

Anyway, have a great week, and enjoy those runs ๐Ÿ˜Š

Mornin

The lovely Scott Jurek there and his Mexican running pal ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Spent all day out at Remembrance things yesterday, standing about in high heels in the cold, getting stiff in the hips ๐Ÿคจ, followed by dinner out. Thankfully I restrained myself ๐Ÿ’ช

Itโ€™s finally here! Marathon weekend ๐Ÿ˜ณ. Got a run today, a slow 5k. A race pace 8k on Wednesday๐Ÿคจ or slow ๐Ÿค”. Depends how I feel. Then a final 5k jog on Friday before the big day ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Got power flapjacks to make and need to think about packing. Travelling light being my prime mover The lighter the bag, the lighter the stress I hate stuff! ๐Ÿ‘

Let the faffage commence โ˜บ๏ธ

Started this week off with bang by doing a cheeky HM at slow jog pace. The windy wet weather has beaten me back "indoors" so I'm running down in the bunker/600 car carpark cavern under our apartment building. I think I am going to try to do a joggy HM plus a 5k and 10k "speed" session every week from now on. I've also decided to get back down to a more mid-range normal bmi instead of using my running calorie allowance on extra pints of IPA!

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to Lordi

Blessed IPA!! Ooh, back in the Batcave! Well done for all the HMing ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

It was blowing hard out there. I dressed for it but ended up stripping off layers as I was hill running๐Ÿ˜คโ˜บ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜› in the graveyard so โ€˜โ€˜twas ok ๐Ÿ‘

Well done on getting back out there roseabi ๐Ÿ˜Š. Having just read Eat & Run - I recognise the picture of Scott too ๐Ÿ˜€. I had a pretty good week of running last week and got out most days in the end. I paced at parkrun for the first time on Saturday which was a new experience and I enjoyed staying right on pace. Sunday was the scenic 7 mile race - it absolutely chucked it down but luckily stopped before the start. Was pleased with my result of sub 54mins. Interval training planned for tonight..

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to Macmac

Did you enjoy Eat and Run? Did you make any of the recipes??

Wow, pacing - awesome!! Well done for the 7 miler - fab time!!!!

Thanks ๐Ÿ˜Š. Yes really enjoyed the book, and also โ€˜Running with the Kenyansโ€™ by Adharanand Finn. I took away the general principles of a plant based diet from reading these, and I started eating polenta as itโ€™s the nearest I could find to cornmeal.

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathon in reply to Macmac

Polenta makes a darn good cake ๐Ÿฐ

I made his anti inflammatory smoothie every few days for months It was lovely too

His breakfast burritos sounded good ๐Ÿ˜‹

Macmac profile image

Very good - they do sound nice. I like to add plenty of turmeric to lentils or polenta as my anti-inflammatory post run meal ๐Ÿ™‚.

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathon in reply to Macmac

The smoothie was lush. I got the veg protein powder free on a give-away magazine in Holland and Barrett ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Is that green lentils or the Red? I love green dried lentils they go dead well with celery and carrots ๐Ÿ˜‹

Macmac profile image
MacmacMarathon in reply to misswobble

Red - I do love the green but they take longer to cook ๐Ÿ˜

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathon in reply to Macmac

Great things lentils. Dhal ๐Ÿ˜ณ. Nuff said ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‹

You can get a white lentil. โ€œuridโ€, which you can soak overnight. It bubbles up into a batter from which you make little pancakes (dosas) to go with your masala Running fuel โ›ฝ๏ธ ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Hi Macmac, What pace pacer were you? And excuse my lack of knowledge, how do you keep to that pace. Eyes glued to average pace on your phone or watch perhaps? Sub 54 minutes for 7 miles! Wow! Seriously whizzy! Did your various muscles recover quickly, I wonder? Congratulations! Well done to you!

Macmac profile image
MacmacMarathon in reply to over61andstilltrying

Thanks! ๐Ÿ˜Š I was pacing 30mins, 6min/km which is about my long run pace so I stuck to that as I know how it feels, and did check my watch to confirm periodically yes! ๐Ÿ˜€ We often train at specific paces at run club too which helps. Muscles were fine today as the 7 mile was short compared to my normal Weekend run, but I can feel them a bit now after 7km of intervals!! ๐Ÿค“ Rest day tomorrow I think..

over61andstilltrying profile image
over61andstilltrying10 Miles in reply to Macmac

Thank you for your reply. It amazing the vast range of different speeds we all run at. I run holding my phone with Run the Map running, so I can see average speed. I would like to try for a sub 30 minute Parkrun and assumed that I would try to keep my speed at 10km/hr by glancing at my phone. ( Still find km/hr more my thing than minute/km) I had sort of wondered as many people have running apps on their phones or had running watches where having a pacer person came into things. Good not to have to check your phone or watch I suppose. I do read our Parkrun reports and I am not sure that they have pacers at our local one. It is so hilly round here that it is very difficult to find a route where can hold a steady pace, I don't really even try. So I certainly have no clue what a particular pace feels like.

Now I am also wondering what sort of intervals you did over your 7km. There is just so much to find out about running! Enjoy your rest day! ๐Ÿ’ค๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ›Œ

Hi all and happy Monday!

I did a flat 10mile run yesterday helping my pal decide if she is up to the HM at Gosport next Sunday. Good news was she didn't feel too bad so am hopeful she'll be there (has sports injury clinic tomorrow)

Tues eve run club is hills this week, weds might be a jolly with the off rd club. Fri morning is a 5k with the Ventnor Sloggers with breakfast afterwards and Parkrun marshalling Sat before HM Sunday! What did I fill my life with before running eh??!!๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚x

Hi all - tried something a bit different yesterday - instead of a long run on my own, joined up with some fellow club runners for a โ€˜clubโ€™ version of a long run I.e. not slow! But somehow was able to keep up and talk most of the way, whilst doing 10k faster than my last race๐Ÿ˜ฎ. Then we went for coffee, cake & chat, and back home for a bath by 11am.

This might become a habit...

roseabi profile image

Wow, that sounds amazing!! Not a bad habit to have either ๐Ÿ˜Š

My first time at my running club's track night tonight - and boy, was that tough! I knew it would be speed work but I've only ever done the 30:20:10 intervals, this was a different kettle of fish! We had different lengths of track to run according to our speed - mine was about 600 metres I think, and the idea is you all finish at a similar time. Then 90 seconds recovery after each run. Five repeats. Quite exhausting! And I came last in 4 out of 5 repeats! Plenty of room for improvement!

Weds eve I have the normal club run - around 7.5k. Then Sunday is our club 5k race. Busy busy! My life seems to have been taken over! ๐Ÿ‘ฝ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿƒ

Haha - I see what you did there roseabi :) I am just getting to the big race face-off part in the book now. Yes, I am a very slow reader :). As for my running, I did a 15k on Sat with the group and a hilly 10k this morn on my own. Both relatively slow paces. Saturday was cold and very windy. These last few weeks have been a bit stressful on other fronts so maybe some of that is playing into my running too. Upped my weekly distance from around 28-30k to 34k last week. Will try for a bit more this week. And am adding in some easy cycling for cross training this time around too (Nothing fancy - just me and my $150 Schwinn mountain bike). Still experimenting with this new plan. Been looking at others and they are SO different from one another. I expect I will just adapt this one as I did the HM plan.

You get the Gold Star! Most people spotted Scott Jurek over and above Arnulfo Quimare with whom he is running in the picture ๐Ÿ˜Š

I wish I was a slow reader - I'm a terrible skimmer!

Well done for getting out! Sorry to hear about the stress, but I like the sound of your cross training xx

I'm having an absolute cow of a week, not least because there's water pouring into my bathroom from the flat upstairs, and all the tiles have fallen off the sodden wall and smashed onto my lovely whale pot ๐Ÿ˜ญ. It started well though, with a night run (my last organised run of the year!) on Sunday, where despite having only a few hours sleep I got a PBโ€”so HOORAY for the speed challenge! I'd never have managed it otherwise, I'm certain. There's a brilliant photo of me pelting past the Kelpies but it's so expensive to buy race photos...(who am I kidding, I'll cave eventually). I'm looking forward to testing out my new head torch on a longer night run at the weekend, with maybe a mini run tomorrow before heading to work. Then on my rest day on Friday I will sit in my pyjamas and eat my weight in chocolate because that's just necessary right now.

This weekend was my last HM for the year. Taking some time now to work on my leg strength as my calf is still not back to 100% and I would like to take on more long distance running next year so will rather get it sorted now!

So that means no races!!! Except three I have already entered for :)

25 Nov - Blooming trail run 11km

1 Dec - Woolworths short distance triathlon

19 Dec - Sundowner 10km race

Physio has booked me off from all running and cycling until the 25 Nov so not sure how I will fair for the race but I will be hitting the pool hard to burn some calories and have been given strength workouts to build up my stained soleus muscle and quads :) Maybe do yoga classes while I am at it...

Down time, oh except for three races ๐Ÿ˜‚

Well done, Monkey!! Hope the rehab goes well - I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what you get up to next year!
