Advice needed

My furthest run is currently 10.3km (6.5 miles) having consolidated 10k distance for the last month, but I have seen that the great south run is on the 21st of October and is 10miles/16.1km. Whilst it would be possible to add the 5/6km necessary to run this far in the 6 weeks I want to know if it is a good idea or if I should just scrap this brainwave before I hurt myself?

Thanks 😊

I think that would be fine, there's always the option of walk breaks. A fun goal to have!! 😊

Thank you 😊 I'll try incorporating some walking into my long run tomorrow and see if I can get to 12k and take it from there then 😊😊

Why not :) It's always great to have something to work towards!

It is doable even if you don't run 10 miles prior to the event ..the atmosphere, adreonline and being in a group of runners on the day would see you through..

Run/walk are always a good way to go as well..

10 miles is my next goal should be up to 14K this week but in no rush ad no race booked.

Always a cautionary note not to overdo things or push to hard and risk injury

Good luck and have a fab day and most important enjoy it 😁

Thanks for the advice 😊 I think I'm going to go for it but take plenty of precautions so I don't hurt myself, will definitely incorporate some walking and do knee strengthening exercises

Hi, everyone has given good advice so if you are up for the challenge then go for it! There are usually a few running it from the forum. I did it two years ago and have entered again this year. It is a great event if you like big races - the atmosphere is great! Good luck with your training!πŸ‘πŸ™‚

Good to know there will be some fellow forum people around 😊 I'll have to start training now I see you're a lot more prepared than me πŸ‘πŸΌ

I've entered too! I have just built up from 10k to 13k by increasing 1k each week over the last three weeks, having only done three or four 10k runs prior to that. I have tried to take my pace down for the longer run each weekend (with two 5ks during the week). I'm working on the basis that I could walk the remaining 3k if necessary :D - I entered with a fairly conservative time estimate to allow for walking. Go for it, listen to your body and good luck :)

Edited to add: I just looked at your profile - I'm twice your age so am thinking you will have no problem at all !!!!

Seems I've already found 2 people doing the GSR 😊 Looks like I'll be doing a fairly similar plan with lots of walking even though I definitely have youth on my side!

I am running gsr this year too! Slow down on the long run and try to add an extra km. There are a few weeks left for some increased distance training and the crowds will help too. Go for it!

I reckon you’ll be fine, a bit of advice I was given was, don’t do the whole distance before the event, save a bit for the day, that way you’ll get a real buzz when you complete it. I’ve done a couple of HM’s now and I never do the whole distance in training, the max I do is 12 Miles, I get such a buzz at completing them it’s great, and feels special, so relax, you’re going to be great πŸ‘πŸ‘
