Ibruprofen

I have read somewhere that people with amd should not be using ibruprofen. Does anyone know if this is correct please?

I was told that any aspirin type pain reliever shouldn’t be used with a bleeding retina.

I have wet MD & get a shot of Eylea every 6 to 7 weeks. The Retina Specialist who is treating my WMD & gives me the shots told me not to take Ibuprofen or Aspirin for pain or headache, but to use an Acetaminophen type product like Tylenol.

Oh dear! I take both aspirin and ibuprofen! I do have aspirin prescribed, (before I had AMD). Perhaps I'd better drop it? I shall have to ask at my next check up. Thanks for this information!

I don't think you should take aspirin and ibuprofen at the same time in any circumstances. I used to take two paracetamols and two ibuprofens, both with codeine, after my shots. Sometimes, that only just took the edge off the pain, so I don't know how I'd go on not taking it.

I used to have regular check-ups with my ophthalmology outpatients. But suddenly, (and I was told nothing), I haven't heard from them for a good year or so! My AMD had become stable, and I had had a successful cataract op. in the good eye, which is brilliant. But surely I should be monitored on a more frequent basis than a year?!

Anyway I've now emailed them to find out what's going on.

It may well be "they" haven't forgotten or discharged me; it's just Covid limiting the usual cattle market!

I shall definitely find out re ibuprofen and aspirin when I do hear from them.

How frequently are others on this forum followed up when stable? Of course deterioration is always on the cards: and yes I do check the Amsler Grid regularly. xx

A pharmacist told me I shouldn't take (actually, shouldn't have taken) aspirin and ibuprofen together – it's that they are both NSAIDs.

I definitely think you should make sure you shouldn't be having check-ups. My last injection was the end of March last year, but my next check-up is about 8 weeks after my last one. In fact, to get that last jab, it was lucky I had taken a look at my OCT, and knew I had a "bump". They were trying (albeit amongst the Covid-19 outbreak) to give me the all-clear. They are not infallible. If you're still not sure, go to Vision Express, or maybe Specsavers, and get them to do an OCT.

I am worried that expediency - longer gaps between injections and best clinical practice are at odds. I have really had to push for timely injections not to mention actually getting the appointments

Hi fed12. I haven’t had an injection for 2 years. But I am normally monitored every 3-4 months ( had one visit cancelled at beginning of covid).Although my eyesight seems stable I’ve had a recall for next week (only 3 weeks since my last visit) which can only mean I’m due an injection.

Hello fed12, Before stopping any prescribed medicine you should check first with the doctor who prescribed it and explain your current diagnosis of AMD. It's always best to check with a trained medical professional before stopping or starting any new drugs.
