I have never known this, having had cataract surgery on both eyes, which was a painless experience, albeit obviously i was nervous. I suppose it might be possible to perhaps have a sedative for extremely nervous people, but certainly not any anaesthetic. I am now having eye injections for macular degeneration, and again, no real pain, only discomfort.

I can't see them giving a general anaesthetic for a cataract operation, as there are too many risks. I had one done 3 months ago and there's no pain; just lie there and keep your eye still. One of those ops where the thought of it it 100 times worse than the actual procedure. Hope you get on OK. Mike.

Do you just have anesthetic drops for cataract removal?

Yes, never felt a thing. Nothing to worry about. :)

Thank you.

If I get anesthetic drop the same as I get for Eyelea jabs I will feel everything.

You shouldn't feel anything if they do it correctly, just a little pressure on the eye with jabs. I would have a serious word with them; they are obviously not giving you enough drops.

I haven’t heard of anyone having a general anesthetic for cataract ops,

But I wish they did as I’m very worried about how much anesthesia I will get

Due to poor anesthetic when I have my Eyelea injections for wet AMD.

My last injection was a total nightmare.

I have had one cataract taken off, they gave me a IV with something in it to make me sleepy, I slept through the whole thing and scheduled for the other one to be removed in September. I dread all the drops you have to use before and after but love how good my vision is without a cataract on it. Went from not seeing the big E to 20/20 in couple days. Hope this next one will be as successful.

I had 2 cataract operations

I had iv midazolam to relax and then local anaesthetic in the eye. I have only hazy memories of the procedure as the midazolam made me feel quite drunk! It was fine,

I just wish they'd told me I'd wake up with wet hair, I'd have packed my bag differently

Thank you for your reply. Were you able to go home afterwards and how did the drug make you feel? Do you have injections in either eye and was it stable at the time of your operation. Thelma.

Midazolam makes me very woozy but it doesn't last long - I was fine to go home in a cab afterwards

I was at the clinic earlier this week and someone was arranging to have cataracts under general anaesthetic, but I don't know why general, I certainly wasn't offered it.
