Hello everyone. Im 57 years old male. Just diagnosed with wet AMD on my left eye just last week And in my case the blood vessel in the retina is bleeding a lot. The black spot started in my peripheral vision together with the wavy lines but it was spreading fast towards my central vision in just one week. Two days ago i had my first shot of Eylea and i really thought the spot is getting bigger everyday. Im really scared now in just one week i’m losing my eyesight. Please advise on how to stop the bleeding in the retina and is this reversible?

I would really appreciate any help

Thanks

Hello Bitoyteroy,

May God Bless You and Everyone Else Here. We can all use one mass miracle. The person or persons to speak with about your diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, is your ophthalmologist/doctor. Locate the finest available to you. I have learned that everyone responds differently to the medications. There are also laser procedures to help as well as a surgical procedure called a vitrectomy to drain the fluid. These are extremes and can only be recommended and performed by very qualified eye surgeons/retina specialists. None of these procedures, including the Eylea needle injections, come without risks. Laser treatments are sometimes done along with the injected medications. Other doctors will add injected steroids. In many cases, the laser treatments can damage peripheral vision. There are no guarantees with any of the treatments. It is very much a trial and “wait and see” treatment attitude. Again, every patient is different and responds differently to these treatments. I recently read that the Eylea medication only yields vision improvement in 31% of patients treated. To me, this is not very much; yet it is the best medication available presently. In the rest, the best patients can hope for is stabilization of the condition, preventing worsening. A medical panel review just came to the conclusion “We have only just begun and we have a long way to go.” No medical professional possesses the “crystal ball” with these conditions.

Take care,

Thanks for the swift reply Somehow i thought that the spreading of the black spot is slower now but still scared of getting to my central vision so quick. Also i read somewhere in this site that after an injection with eylea my eyes become cloudy. Its been 3 days now after the injection. Does this resolve after some days or longer.? Thanks much again. We all really need miracles and hopefully new meds to finally cure amd.

Hi bitoyteroy, sending you a hug X diagnosis is a scary time. I have a different condition but had both lucentis and eyelea inj. Each have what is known as a ' loading dose ' of 3 inj to kick off treatment so it may be you dont get an obvious result until the 3rd. But could be sooner. Everyone is different.

I found my vision got more blurry for a couple of days after each inj but improved after.

Try not to worry, wont make it better and might make it worse.

The inj are to stabilise the eye, not everyone gets an actual improvement, but you have received treatment very quickly so that's good. I did get an improvement every time ( at its worst my eye could go to loss of central vision within an hour) although not sustained beyond a few weeks. Be prepared to need the inj long term.

The macular society have an excellent website and helpline .

There is dietary and supplement advice on their site plus lots of info on conditions etc.

Best wishes going forwards.

Thank you so much for your quick response. I really appreciate it. Im going to update you with the latest as soon as i get some. Its really tough to have this disease and how it progress rapidly in my case I’ll try to relax and try not to worry. You’ve been of great help

Hi there,

We are sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis. The good news is that you are being treated quickly.

We assume that you are in the UK - the only licenced treatment for wet AMD in the UK is via anti VEGF injections into the eye - either Eylea or Lucentis. Your consultant will usually have mentioned to you if laser treatment would be appropriate for you, however it is rarely used these days. I have enclosed a link to our Treatment booklet for your information.

Do please have a look around on our website, and email us directly if you need to discuss anything in particular at help@macularsociety.org. You can also call us on 0300 30 30 111 from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

You may also be interested to know about our counselling service. Link also attached.

We wish you well, and are here to support when you are ready.

Hi Bitoyteroy. Sorry to hear about your problems. Have you contacted your opthalmologist to report what has happened since your injection. If not, maybe a quick call would put your mind at ease. With the cloudiness you speak of, I have found that after injections for a short time (and I was told this would happen by my opthalmologist before I started to have the injections) that initially the sight becomes a little worse but then clears and it's OK again. I would advise you though to make that call to your opthalmologist as he/she will be the only one who can put your mind at ease. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi. I am also in the US. It’s very important that you see a retina specialist not just an ophthalmologist and you probably are. I had my first bleed when about your age, on my food eye. The other eye has leakage and other problems. Thankfully my vision improved after the first injection but not much after 3 days. It was better by 2 weeks. But everyone is different. I’m sure you have read that wet AMD rarely causes total blindness. I was very scared at first. Thankfully my eyes have stabilized and I am still able to work. My brother however, with his macular/retinal problems had to get disability in his fifties. Hold onto hope. Even with impaired vision, my brother enjoys life and strives to do all he can for himself and others. With aids and large screens he reads some, cooks some, uses his computer some, talks on the phone. He cannot drive. I hope you will see more improvement on the eyelea.

When I have had an active bleed, I've found it takes a while to see the benefit of an injection

First, it has to stop or slow down the bleeding. Then you have to wait for the blood already present to be reabsorbed, it's not instant but it does happen eventually in my experience
