Flying after Lucentis injection, is it safe?

Hey all my name is Becky I am 36 years old and have been having lumps growing in my retina for last 4 years, also new vein growth and retinal bleeds. Also had a lump on right heart boarder and lumps around edges of lungs (borderline abnormal). The doctors tell me it’s some sort of auto immune disease but nobody know what it is. They don’t know what the lumps are in my eye as they say they have just never seen anything like it before. I usually have avastin injected into my eye after a bleed and usually takes about 4 months to fully get my vision back. I have recently moved to a Scottish Island so now need to fly to get to hospital, and I just wanted to know if it is safe to fly the same day as injection? I am having lucentis this time due to now being under the care of a different hospital in different area. It’s only a small light air craft and terrifies me and really causes me stress, but aside from the stress factor, is it safe to fly after lucentis injection? It’s a 1 hour flight time.

Thanks in advance x

Had Avastin myself.

Wonderful, but Degeneration caught early.

SORRY Becky but can't help about flying. You seem a very brave person.

Nottingham.

Good luck

best to check with hospital. I was advised it is not flying but being away from urgent hospital access re holidays etc- presumably you could fly back quickly if a problem arose? I don't know about your condition so doctors advice would be wise

Thought I’d replied yesrterday

I’ve flown several times only a few days after an injection but never right after. I agree with others, you need to contact the clinic and ask.

Dear Becky

That all sounds dreadful. I wish I could say anything to make things easier for you. As others have already said, listen to the advice of our hospital. Maybe the new hospital can come up with new ideas. Perhaps the lucentis will work better for you, too. I really hope so. You are still so very young to be lumbered with so much stress so early in life. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that things will improve for you. Best wishes. x

Becky, you have my support and support of many others here! I suggest you check with your medical providers for the definitive answer. However. I will put forth that a small aircraft is not going to go the heights of a large passenger jet. There won't be the sit pressure changes that might affect the eye. Follow your doctor's advice, though. Please let us know how you are doing. It's a nice group of folks here, who share some experiences. Welcome and my best wishes for positive outcomes with your health.

Linda

I have never had any advice about travelling despite many injections. I have flown within 24hrs of injections several times, never even thought of it and had no issues whatsoever.

But, for peace if mind and as suggested by others just contact the Specialist Nurse beforehand.

Hi Becky ,

I am so sorry to hear you have so many problems at such a young age.

I have no idea about your flying question so as suggested by others best to check with the doctors. I have histoplasmosis syndrome which started in my lungs and transferred to my left eye causing a bleed , I wondered if your condition could be something similar. There doesn't seem to be a lot known about it but may be worth you asking. I send my best wishes to you for the future.

Hi Becky I was told I could fly 3 days after an injection, which I did and was totally fine. But I agree its best to ask.
