Distorted Vision

So recently my Wet MD is no longer a black spot but is distorted... This was good news but its affecting my vision. My left eye is MD free but it seems that everywhere I look everything is distorted. My good eye was check for signs of MD last month so I m sure if it had something it was detected. Do you know how long it takes to get used to it. As its getting me down and feel like I can't cope with it I just want to close my eyes and sleep it off.

Hi Nadz001

That sounds very unpleasant, say the least. Do you see the distortion in each eye when you cover one eye up at the time? It could be that your eyes are not focusing on the same spot. There could be a number of reasons for that, not necessarily the AMD.

More than 20 years ago, long before I had AMD, I suddenly had awful double vision with distortion. No proper eye test was done at the eye clinic; they just measured the discrepancy of each eye, which was way out. They didn't know what had caused it and no treatment was given. It took over 6 months to correct itself. And just like you, I did not want to look at anything. It was quite distressing. But as I said, that was a long time ago.

Nowadays, with all the modern equipment and interventions, more can be done. Have you told your Ophthalmologist at your clinic about it? Also: Perhaps the optometrist at you optician can advise you. I would pay them a visit.

Hope you get it sorted. Please let us know how you are getting on. Good Luck!

Hi unfortunatley I had 3 dilated eye exams as i was panicking and they saw nothing wrong. I am getting the distortion when I am having both eyes open with the healthy one only everything seems fine amid some floaters. I am hoping this is till my brain adjusts

Hi,

When I had my first bleed several years ago this happened to me too. I remember it as being exhausting, so sympathise. The consultant explained it as being because unfortunately the bleed was right in the centre of the Macular. Eventually as the injection took effect it cleared and eventually went altogether. If it helps, none of my later bleeds were ever as disruptive of the two eye vision again. I do remember my daughter making a patch to cover one side of an old pair of glasses for respite in the house, but that’s possibly not advisable! Take care 🌷

Thanks a lot I ve had this since I was 19 and have a macular scar so vision cannot be fully restored. I am 33 now but this is my lowest point since I had the disease. I try not to wear a patch so maybe I will get used to it.

Sending a hug and hoping that it recedes soon. I sometimes think the bright light makes distortion seem worse too. My first eye is scarred now too, but less of an interference than it was at that time, so hope it settles soon.

Agreed, it’s important. Are you UK based? If so are you aware of the Macular Society w @ m groups which are particularly for working age people with macular conditions? There are quite a lot of us out there.

I had the same thing especially when driving the white lines used to lift off the ground as I approached them and zig zag. It was awful and exhausting and at times made me feel sick. My consultant told me just stick with it and your brain will sort it out and it has. I can’t tell you how long it took because the change happened slowly but it did happen I don’t have any double vision at all now. I do now when bored look at people with my right eye they look round young and cuddly and then with just my left instantly longer faces twenty pounds lighter but much older. Good luck and stick with it, I hope it will sort it’s self out.

I thought metamorphopsia were pretty much par for the course with CNV/MD. Did your optician or ophthalmologist not give you an Amsler grid to keep a check?

With both my eyes, I had the darkening central vision some time before the metamorphopsia.

Surely it's the buckling of the retina caused by the blood vessels pushing through. Or are we talking about different things here?

If I close my MD eye I see quite normal with my good eye. My good eye does not have any macular. Or are you refering to the diseased eye? My wet md has lost almost central vision amid some distortion as it has scarring

Also at the time I was not given any treatment.

With my CNV/AMD I found I got the distortion some weeks after my vision dimmed.

I would have thought the distortion indicates further growth under (and through?) the retina. When did you last have an OCT?

Two months ago and they told me that there is scarring. I had dimmed vision for 11 years almost this is the first time thst I am seeing something from the central vision. To be honest if I had that eye only it would have been good news but with both eyes its diffifult to adjust. When it happened I was 19 so I never had eye tests or anything my good eye compensated for it then one day I woke up without central vision and damage had been done. I have a cindition called best disease which is a juvenile type of md but with the same symptoms and effects of amd

If there's been a significant change, I think you should get it checked out as soon as possible. I read CNV can develop with Best's disease (but is not the only cause of metamorphopsia with it).

Thanks I will go next Thursday as I have an appointment as I already went several times to the emergency and was seen by ophthalmologist and was told there is no significant difference

I have the same thing with the dark spot being replaced by distortion. I find that wearing sunglasses helps. The distortion is still there but less noticeable. Give it a try, maybe it will help.

I had the steroid implant a couple of weeks ago. The follow-up appointment shows that the macular oedema has reduced by almost a half. That doesn't, however, translate into greater acuteness or clarity of vision. My left eye looks like I am seeing things in a tarnished mirror. Also, the implant is visible as a floater which also blocks clarity of vision so I am hoping it will eventually dissolve and disappear. I am grateful that the other eye is free of macular oedema and am currently taking Macu-Shield capsules to ensure it stays that way. I would also recommend those with MD should wear shades, particularly in strong sunshine.
