Has anyone had a doctor not be able to penetrate the eye wall ?

Hello, I am new here and have just had my second Avastin injection. The first one went well, felt a little pressure as the needle was inserted. That day my eye was tearing and sore next morning a little crusty. Bloodshot was not too bad and after a week all seemed back to normal.

Yesterday 5/22/18 I went for the second. The doctor tried to insert needle twice, I felt the pressure twice in two places. He was unable to penetrate the eye wall left the room. The nurse said "sorry about that and did it hurt" ? I said not so much hurt but a lot of pressure. She said she was going to prepare another location. I asked if it would take a long time to numb up. She said it was numb and she was putting antiseptic in the new area. Doctor came back and tried a third time and lots of pressure the pushed hard and extreme pain. I felt the needle as if it was in my skin. Has anyone had a doctor not be able to penetrate the eye wall ?

Hi Monte6, my very first Lucentis inj there was a feeling like being thumped in the eye with a dull pencil and then incredible pressure which seemed to last for ages. I literally thought my eyeball was going to squish like a grape. Hurt like hell and I reflexively moved away.

She never admitted it but it turned out the Dr put too much pressure on the q tip to mark my eye and then on eye clamp..

I was v nervous next inj as I didn't know it wasn't meant to feel like that and told nurses. They of course were horrified and new Dr was wonderful. At my review I asked consultant why it felt that way and he said it was pushing too hard on clamp. I made sure to tell nurses every time what had happened. It took me a few inj to ' relax' but I never had one as bad as the first .

If you felt needle like in skin then I would say you need more anaesthetic. My consultant told me to ask for more as some eyes v sensitive.

Good luck going forward x

Thank you for you reply, good information. I think the anesthetic wore off as they let me sit for 20 minutes after the first try.

Hi there, my eyes seem to be very resistant too. I wondered if it is tension and asked the doc if I should take a sedative before the next visit. She said 'No' but I will be interested to hear about others' experiences.

I thought the medication may harden the eye wall after the first injection possibly. Did your first one go in easy ?

That is outrageous! Your Dr is not qualified to give injections.

My Dr numbs my eye twice, once with ointment, then followed with a quick painless injection. I feel pressure, but never pain. I was going to complain to him about the pressure, but after hearing your stories, I realize how fortunate I am to have Dr Will. Going on two years now...

Thank you for the reply. I think you are correct he does not seem very good at this. I am documenting the condition of my eye daily in case of infection. Happy to hear it is not normal may need to change doctors.

I was given a prescription for Polymyxin B Sulfate and Trimethoprim Ophthalmic Solution; one drop four times a day for three days to fight infection. Infections must be avoided.

Thanks for that information. I am doing pretty well on the infections have not had one so far. Just now starting to see the white in my eye, it will be two weeks tomorrow.

Hi Monte, I'm with you 100% on this. I seem to have been having a really bad time (pain wise) since I've had this new young doctor. I've had upward of 20 injections from about 10 different injectors but my current one makes a real hash of it. I would quite like to be able to show HER what it feels like!!
