Hi is Macular Degeneration always detected by a comprehensive eye exam or it can go unnoticed by an ophthalmologist?

Hello Nadz001,

It is highly unlikely that any type of macular degeneration would go unnoticed by a retinal ophthalmologist during a comprehensive eye examination.

Nowadays they have very sophisticated equipment.

Mine was picked up by opthomologist when having eyes tested for new glasses.

Hi there I would say that an optometrist ( as in high street opticians) should be able to detect AMD especially as some are using OCT tests now or at least be able to detect something is amiss and refer you on. An ophthalmologist as seen in hospitals should definitely be able to detect AMD of any sort dry or wet.

Yes I always see an opthalmoloigst in hospital I have one macular in one eye and was given the clear in the other. I was wondering if it could go undetected. Thanks
