Im confused about which supplements to take

I have been taking Viteyes 2 + omega and in fact have not seen any improvement, in fact slight deterioration. I have noticed that on a few of the posts that Macushield seems to be a better option. Any advice would br appreciated.

I take Macushield but don't really know if it takes a big difference- there' s no firm evidence yet but it is thought to be very helpful

Macushield follows the recipe of a successful trial in America some years ago. Also, I was told that Omega 6 supplements should be avoided with our condition. Only take omega 3. At Boots The Chemist Macushield tablets ate currently available with a special offer "buy 2 and get third box free".

Hi my Consultant has told all of his patients that he would like us to take Macushield Gold if we can as he thinks it is the best so far.

It contains many of the formulas from the Areds2 list so hopefully it is working. Each eye is different so hard to tell if something that works for one person will work for another. Worth trying though as once lost sight cannot be regained!

Good luck with whatever one you decide!

Hello Molly,

Viteyes and Macushield Gold (not basic Macushield) all have the formula as recommended by the AREDS2 trial which is the most up to date and robust piece of research about supplements for dry macular degeneration.

Please see our booklet called nutrition and eye health below;

I am afraid that the supplements are unlikely to stop the progress of the condition entirely, but research indicates that they will slow it down.

Best wishes

Hi

Regarding the AREDS2 trial , is it still of the opinion that ex smokers should not be taking vitamin A as first recommended in the trials ?

Hi Molly

I have just joined this sight (literally). I have found out that if you are sensitive to Zinc then you shouldn't take supplements that contain it as it can cause the progression from dry to wet AMD. I too take the Viteyes along with Macushield (the more the merrier?) the Viteyes does contain Zinc. Its not for me to say but I would find out if you are sensitive to Zinc. I'm waiting for my test results to come back next week.

Hello Pauline,

The AREDS2 trial has excluded vitamin A in it's recommended formula as it can be carcinogenic for smokers and ex smokers.

As for zinc, the recommended amount of zinc in the AREDS2 formula is now reduced from the AREDS1 formula and is now 25mg.

We recommend that before anyone starts taking a vitamin supplement that they should speak to their GP about suitability.

Best wishes

Mmm.. the problem with speaking to a GP 're which supplements to take, is that they too are unsure! I've been in touch with a specialist in Toronto who has carried out my genetic testing and given me recommendations for which supplements I should be taking. It's not a case of "One size fits all " unfortunately a lot of GP's are under the impression it is 😐
