Seeing lots of eye floaters, worried

Since Monday I have been seeing a lot more eye floaters than usual and I am very worried about it.

I have strabismus (exotropia) and I only see a floater normally about once every 6 month or so. I'm also near sighted.

I am a massive hypochondriac and I think my retina is becoming detached. I am going to see my optician in two weeks.

I'm 19 if it helps.

Should I be worried about this, and should I get an appointment with my GP/optician at an earlier date?

Dear throwawy234235,

I am sorry to read about your concerns.

Yes, I think that it is important that you see the optician as soon as possible. Apart from anything else, this may also help to introduce a feeling of control into the situation, which may help to address the fear element. You don't want to be worrying about this for the next 2 weeks!

Although we deal with macular related conditions, please do ring us if this may help, as opposed to sitting and worrying about your eyes.

Please contact us if you would like our factsheet on floaters.

The Macular Society helpline is open 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday on 0300 3030 111 or please email us via help@macularsociety.org.

Kind regards,

Hi there

First of all, don't panic! You don't say whether your eyesight has become suddenly worse. Normally, floaters are no cause for alarm, but if you suddenly see a whole shower of them then that certainly needs investigating, the sooner the the better if only to put your mind at rest. Floaters can appear with a number of eye conditions. I think you are jumping to conclusions though unless you have had an injury to your head or face.

i understand your concern about your eyes. Our eyesight is precious and we all need to do everything we can to preserve it. You call yourself "A Massive Hypochondriac". If that is the case maybe you could benefit from relaxation classes if they are any in your area. Your GP will be able to give you information on that.

Hope you will get your problem sorted soon. I wish you the very best.
