has anyone else lost babies due to their lupus and gone on to have a 'successful' pregnancy?

im just wondering what to expect from my 'pre-conception' appointment and i am more than a little aprehensive as is my hubby. ty in advance x x

Hi mummy bumble. I have recently been diagnosed and have no babies of my own (yet!). My mum has APS and had me before her diagnosis when she was only 22. She then met my step dad and they had 11 miscarriages during which time my mum was diagnosed with APS. They tried everything including heparin injections three times a day but nothing worked. Eventually they tried pioneering treatment (at the time) that most GPs and even rheumatologist snubbed and they immediately had my brother and then my sister and then another brother!!

Needless to say everyone is different but it is more than possible. The 'babies' are 14, 13 and 11 now

Hi, I was only diagnosed in January, but docs think I have had sle lupus for over 25 years as I had sudden onset rheumatoid arthritis in my twenties. Docs told me that pregnancy would help as body produces steroids!!! I fell pregnant with twins, lost one at nine weeks but went on to have a healthy boy, miscarried another at 11 weeks, then had another healthy boy, miscarried a little girl at 21 weeks, then went on to have another boy, but had placenta previa (the placenta covers the opening of the womb) and had to stay in hospital for 10 weeks, but my third son was born healthy. Writing this makes it sound difficult, but I have 3 wonderful sons 25, 23 and 19 years now and I would not have changed anything. When docs were investigating lupus diagnosis they asked me if I had had any miscarriages, so may be significant. As you can see, this was many years ago and docs have told me advances in medicine have enabled better diagnosis of lupus than was around 25 years ago so hopefully support is better now too, good luck with your appointment x

Hi I have got Antiphospholipid syndrome, Hughes syndrome , sticky blood all the same condition. Some times people with lupus have this as well. I believe the treatment is now Asprin and heparin.

Too late for me, but lucky to have 1 son,1 grandson and one lovely adopted daughter, take a look at the Hughes web site it may help

When you go along to your appointment take someone with you also have a list of questions, a medication list and medical history in date order

I was diagnoosed with lupus during my first pregnancy, of which I had a healthy boy then i had a miscarriage then my 3 pregnancy was another healthy boy

Yes I had many before my son was born. I always knew I had APS but no treatment was need.ed. til pregnant with my son where I had to inj heparin twice daily throughout & he was born @ 36wks.

Hi I have had no miscarriages and have had 4 healthy babies. I was dignoised last October as having SLE, however they think I've had it for years.Hope everything goes well for you.

Hi, I had my first baby in 2010 and have been a lupus sufferer since 2005. I too was petrified at the thought when I found out I was expecting however after in depth discussions with my doctors and close careful monitoring, I went on to have a fairly straight forward pregnancy and healthy baby boy. The greater risk is the time after you have had the baby. Hope all goes well x

Ive had 4 pregnancies, first 2 i lost at around 30 weeks due to HELLP syndrome that was 10 years ago, i was only diagnosed with lupus and APS 2 years ago. Ive had 2 more healthy pregnancies treated with aspirin and clexain injections, but no pregnancy since lupus diagnosis. Would love another baby but im too scared, would love to know what Cons advises you, good luck!

Hi, I was diagnosised after the birth of my first daughter. Although no problems with pregnancy and birth after wards was when I became ill. Although now it seems always had lupus symptoms whilst a child. However I then was put on plaqunill but was taken off of it when I wanted more children. I then had two miscarriages I was then put back on plaqunill due to lupus flare and steroids. I went onto become pregnant this time advised to stay on plaqunil and steroids which resulted in a healthy pregnancy and birth. I have since been diagnosised with Hughes syndrome and treated with asprin. However since seeing Prof Hughes he told me that the reaon for successful pregnancy after miscarriages was due to the plaqunil. As it has a blood thinning agent in it which obiviously helped to keep my blood less sticky. My advice would be to see Prof Hughes at London lupus centre he is a genius in lupus/hughes and pregnancy xxx

Hi there

My first pregnancy was OK although my son was delivered early due to pre-eclampsia. The I had two miscarriages followed by infertility for 6 years - went to recurrent miscarriage clinic - diagnosed with APS/lupus (although now officially primary Sjogrens - it's all related!) - Mr Rai did ovarian drilling for me - managed to get pregnant for one final time - treated with aspirin and had lovely daughter (pre-eclampsia problems after birth though). Never managed to get pregnant again but feel I am very lucky to have my two. So it IS possible but make sure you get all the right help and support. xxx

I have lupus and its been over 20 years now i missed carried a twin but one was fine she is now 25, and i went on to have another this time a boy who is fine and 21 but was told after having him not to have anymore as i struggled with pregnancy, as long as your managed well you should be fine , wish you well and good luck, take care x
