I had one a few years ago as my feet and legs swell. It was very relaxing and after made me keeping going to the loo. It helped but only for a day or two.

I now have regular back massages and reflexology which has the same impact. Not sure if it helps everyone but I like it, if only to relax my tired body :)

I had it done about 10 years ago and it caused the biggest flair, I was so ill and was in bed for 10 months, my then Rheumy said I should never had have it done. I know things have moved on since then but I would check with a Lupus specialist Before you have it done.

Massage and reflexology are safer.

Any kind of massage can release toxins, proceed with caution, even after a very light massage i feel a flare coming on .i have to be so carefull .

Think Brave is right about massage. Know it is not the same thing, but I got in a friends hot tub and was put sitting almost onto couple of the quite strong water massage jets that were on. Next morning I felt I had been beaten black and blue and hurt quite badly for several days, and joints definitely much worse. Have been in the tub several times since, avoided being anywhere near to the jets and lowered the power, and I was absolutely fine. In fact, I felt it did me good. Have been loathe to try any form of massage since then.

I have them quite a lot as have developed lymphoedema in my left leg. I find them very beneficial and they really help with swelling. I know if you have any infection or you are not well they don't recommend you have the massage. I also have learnt how to do them myself in between visits to the therapist. The massage is nothing like a massage you would get at a beauty spa as is very gentle and all about getting the lymph flowing.

I do a gentle bit of lymph massage to clear glue out of my head, I find it very useful, but as has been said, serious massage can cause some conditions to flare. Viral infections in larger muscles can be made much worse and moving toxins may well lead to problems before they are released from the body.

My first experience of Shiatsu left me unable to drive home as my eyes wouldnt focus for about 2 hours!!

In general though anything which undoes tension in the body is a good thing. I like to stretch do T'ai Chi foundation exercises to keep loose.

Thanks very much. I have had massages incl a Shiatsu - which I very much enjoyed but did find a little painful in places ..... Am considering getting LDM but will be asking the consultant first..... my neck / shins / ankles / wrists are all a little swollen for some reason. Thanks for your experiences.
