Is it 'normal' to wake up in pain to find you can't move your fingers for ages due to them being curled up?

( i've had this for years, but only mainly after a 'good night out' when i've drunk alcohol. But the last 2 years have got worse...it happens even when i haven't had an alcoholic drink for quite a while!).

I wake up several times a night with my hands totally numb and sever pain in the right elbow, so I am guessing its all part of the course of things, hope you get some help with it soon.

Hi 'Kerro', thank you for your reply.

How come you don't get cramp in your hands anymore? - are you off the steroids now?

No, i'm not on any (yet...), as my Dr knows I don't believe in taking conventional tablets...so we're 'keeping steroid tablets as a last resort...).

I can't understand how, by taking Steroids etc etc, they would 'help', as they just fill your body up with yet MORE toxins...which, in turn, adds to stress on the immune system etc etc (plus the side effects can add to health problems...).

I'm desperate to find alternative (herbal etc) medicines & use of alkaline diet, to try to lesson my symptoms & pain etc. x

Hi, this is really normal for me, I wedge my hands under my husbands shoulders at night to stop them cramping! I am only on Pain killer when needed , Manuka honey, Q10 and I try to eat Gluten free as much as I can! :)

do your fingers ping or jerk when they finally move?

When I wake up my fingers are curled and it takes several attempts to get my thumb and little finger(at the moment) to move, and when they do they ping/jerk upright. It is very painful and I have just be diagnosed with "trigger finger" and apparently need steroid jabs to reduce the inflamation of the tendon. Havn't had that done yet so dont know if it will cure it or not.

Hope this helps

Hi Kimmyw

I have had trigger fingers for ages and have had the steroid jabs. The first time they gradually went back to the trigger fingers and the second time it seemed to work ok. I used to wake up with fingers like sausages! It was very painful to staighten them, but after the jabs they are 100% better.

It is common for lupus patients to get this. We are privilaged!

I wear sleep splints to prevent this by keeping my hands in a relaxed position which were supplied by the occupational therapy dept at my local hospital as my hands used to do this all the time. Mention your hand problem to your consultant at your next appointment and they hopefully will help you to get this problem dealt with quickly. x
