I worry about my kidneys.

I have had blood in my urine for many years that none of my doctors could explain, just said we will keep an eye on it. Last year, during a flare, for the first time there was protein in urine and it has stayed that way since. At this point Rheumi has suggested that one day he will look at me seeing a nephrologist, but not yet. I am wondering how bad it has to get before we think about preventing more damage. Is there anything I should be doing myself to prevent it from progressing?

My rheumy asked my GP to refer me to a nephrologist after only 2 positive tests for haematuria; and the renal consultant then referred me to a urologist for a cystoscopy. I think I'm lucky because my consultants seem very thorough. I definitely think you need more investigations, particularly if you have proteinuria. I would either push your rheumy or try your GP - I guess s/he may refer you if they're on the ball.

I don't think there is anything you can do to prevent progression, other than being assertive!!

Very best wishes xx

Definitely get a cystoscopy. I have had haematuria for at least two years (blood in urine), finally had a cystoscopy, that showed bladder polyps. I have to go in for a bladder biopsy this Wednesday under general anaesthetic. Bladder polyps could be causing the blood, and if left can become cancerous. Get it checked!!!!

Thank you Marypw and Coppemob for you responses. I have 3 cystoscopies over the last ten years, last one about 3 years ago. They have always said all was good, that is why I am pretty sure it has been kidneys all along and now the protein has started too. I will discuss with Rheumi again in January.

Hi Chapter, I too had blood in urine on and off for some time.Hope things come good for you. GP's, while doing blood tests and keeping an eye on it.., it didn't help.

What did help was kidney supporting foods i.e. beans, cashews etc, herbs that nourish the kidneys.. tried a few and found a local good combination, acupuncture and coming off daily doses of ibuprofen.

Now I take the pain relief only if really needed and also occasionally on weekends when I relax/rest more with my partner and have more social time with friends. 3 years on, its good.
