ANAs jumping around?

Hi,

my ANA has been 1:2560 in six blood tests. Now the latest showed it to be just 1:640. Is it possible that the ANA can jump around like this?

Hi Schnulke, Yes it can jump around. Mine has been 1.80, 1.320 and the last one 1.640. I am also waiting the results of a recent one. These tests have all been done within 18 months. The difference in each result is one what they call a titre and it is the difference of 1 dulution when they are doing the tests. My GP said when I first got my ANA was that it would never go back to normal. Interestingly my first ana was 1.320 then 1.80 then 1.640. You can google ANA Test and it will explain more about the results and the type of pattern you have with your ana eg: homogenous, nucleolar (which I have), rim or peripheral. Hope this helps a little.

ANA shows up on indirect immunofluorescence as fluorescent patterns in cells that are fixed to a slide that is evaluated under a microscope. Different patterns have been associated with a variety of autoimmune disorders, although overlap may occur. Some of the more common patterns include:

Homogenous (diffuse) - associated with SLE and mixed connective tissue disease

Speckled - associated with SLE, Sjogren syndrome, scleroderma, polymyositis, rheumatoid arthritis, and mixed connective tissue disease

Nucleolar - associated with scleroderma and polymyositis

Centromere pattern (peripheral) - associated with scleroderma and CREST (Calcinosis, Raynaud's syndrome, Esophogeal dysmotility, Sclerodactyly, Telangiectasia)
