Morning all,

I have had a 8 week course of Prednisone and now stopped. My face is covered in rash and spots thats really affecting my self esteem and now started with cold sores in corner of my mouth. I don’t want anymore preds due to moon face etc. Can I ask what creams, wash etc you all use to help this kind of thing please?

Thank you

Linds

Hi.im steroid dependent have been for 8 years .I don't get spots but I do suffer sore lips. I think but I could be wrong we can't use creams like zovirax for cold sores.i use blistex medicated lip ointment and it's daktarin for any angular chilitis.i do have sjogren's.plenty of factor 50 lip balm too. I hope you are reducing your pred very very slowly after your 8 week course it is essential xx

Maybe considering contacting your gp.ive looked zovirax up and it can cause complications in lupies so we shouldn't use it x

Be very careful with reducing systemic steroids too quickly!

I’m still on 1mg Prednisolone/day and have lupus nephritis.

Red rashes, spots and cold sores have different causes. The moon face side effect of systemic steroids is usually rare and due to high dosages. Red rashes may be due to your lupus not being managed correctly?

Consult with docs first before coming off steroids or/and reducing dosages.

Thank you, I have being reducing them over the past 4 weeks. I am on and off them all the time. Initially I was on them for 4 years and trying my hardest this past 2yrs to keep off them but not having much success

I've been like that for 8 years and consultants are now starting to say maybe I need a permanent low dose .I currently can't get below 7mgs without my lungs flaring and I reduce mine over 6 months x

Confirming what others have said. I had an awful lupus rash on upper torso in 2018, my worst ever, and still on steroids since then. Every time I have lupus related problems now my skin flares. Just started Azathioprine so I can reduce steroids but they’re the only thing I know that works for my skin. So I’ll see what happens as I reduce but I’m not spending another summer hiding indoors, away from sun, because I look hideous. Good luck to you and remember you sometimes have to fight for the treatment you feel is right. I think I’m always going to need low level Prednisolone. Take care x

Hello LSurtees. I’m sorry for this problem you are having. Have you consulted a dermatologist? There is such a thing as steroid induced rosacea which requires cream and treatment in a totally different way. Meantime. I advise washing skin with only distilled water/pressing a drenched washcloth to your skin. Aquaphor ointment very thin. Rub palms with it and the pat your face gently and even put palms on face and press in. Wait 10 min. Then use oil blotting papers to remove any excess aquaphor. No make up. Best. Titters.

Thank you for your advice. Yes I am under Dermatologist and waiting to have laser treatment tho there is a long waiting list. I have being on antibiotics had numerous steroid creams etc but none have worked. The only thing that clears it up is Prednisone but obviously you get other side affects then! It’s a no win situation. I have being washing with mild water and dabbing my face dry

You are welcome. I would be cautious of putting steroid creams on your face. They cause steroid induced rosacea. Many many Derms do not know or do not care. Plz investigate laser treatment carefully. For this problem you describe it may not work the way you would like.

My saviour has been Kalm. Especially the night and day creams.I had never in my life had more than a flush on my cheeks until August last year when I had a full blown flare and was pretty poorly. My face exploded with spots that were painful to touch and spread into myhairand looked ghastly. Eventually a friend persuaded me to try the above . Not an overnight result but better than anything else I’d tried . I now get a rash when ever I flare so it has become my standby. Good luck!
