I’d be grateful to know the name of your steroid mouth wash.

My doctors have me on steroid inhaler & buccal hydrocortisone + the Gengigel products my periodontist got me on years ago - these help me a lot!

❤️🍀 Coco

PS for decades I was prescribed the wonderful topical steroid adcortyl in orabase...but the stopped producing it in the U.K. about 10 years ago...so I got GP to give me scripts & so I could get it when travelling abroad - aka kenalog in orabase

Hello Jonnyred, I get them every month. Part of lupus and it is worse if I eat anything crusty ie bread or crisps. Or anything hot makes sores easily. So my remedy is to put Bongela gel, also also use mouth wash, before going to bed, I use corsodyl, and put bongela gel after. It takes two days and it is better immediately. I use the gel throughout the day, responsibly ☺️. Highly recommend it. Hope this helps. Lale x

Yes, different kinds of mouth sores too. I get the watery blisters on my palette which irritate rather than hurt, the sores on my cheeks that are big and feel like gumboils which ache then the sores on and under my tongue which sting like hell and last for weeks. My Rheumatologist gave me a remedy of three meds mouthwash comprising of Nystatin, soluble steroid and antibiotic. I rinse my mouth with the mixture three times a day and it relieves the pain and the length of time.

I swear by diflam spray, it doesn’t numb you whole mouth that a mouthwash would. It’s great if you spray the mouth sore and it lets you eat a bit better as well.

Hi one of the things I came across was that Sodium lauryl sulfate, which is in many toothpastes and mouthwashes can contribute to mouth ulcers, especially in people who already have a disposition. I did a bit of an experiment, l used toothpastes and mouthwashes that didn't have SLS in them and mouth ulcers disappeared. I then reintroduced toothpaste with SLS and they reappeared. I stopped they went again. Perhaps worth a try.

I use Corsodyl mouthwash everyday to prevent ulcers and oral thrush - it's worked so far, about 2 years now and no problems.

Hi Jonnyred,

Oral (mouth) and nasal (nose) ulcers are one of the most common features of lupus occurring in around 45% of people who have SLE. We published a blog article on coping with oral and nasal ulcers which you can read at lupusuk.org.uk/coping-with-...

Best wishes,

Chanpreet 💜

Hi Jonny red - I sympathise with you.I am prescribed a steroid inhaler to spray directly onto ulcers/sores. I also use Bonjela for gums and ulcers also.

Corsodyl Daily as a mouthwash. Generally an ulcer can take up to 10 days to disappear, but I only use these things when they are at their worse - not for the whole 10 days. I’ve tried just about every cure over the years and the inhaler seems to work the best.

I use Difflam because the dental clinic prescribed it and its good stuff. Not cheap to buy but worth it if you can afford it...or ask for a prescription if you have a diagnosed condition.

I have Sjogrens, it affects my mouth, nose and eyes and for my mouth Difflam has been a godsend.

Find a herbalist to make a mouthwash up for you. If you’re in UK, look via professional bodies such as the Association of Master Herbalists or NIMH.
