Back to work

Hi everyone,

I haven't been around much lately. I hope you are all doing well and keeping safe and healthy.

I've been trying to get as much time in with my family as possible. I went back to work today. I have 3 days of training and the children return on Monday 7th.

I just wondered what anyone else working in a school is experiencing at the moment. I'm in a special school with children with PNI. We currently have 4 classes in the school and a class in a unit outside. So we have 2 / 3 bubbles in our school. The bubble i am in is with the class next to mine. I had quite good feelings about that. However i find out today that a couple members of staff are jumping through the bubbles. I myself am not to happy about that as i feel it defeats the points of bubbling up. Do any of you think I am being a bit dramatic? I also was unhappy about the lack of social distancing at a TRAINING day. I'm not quite sure why a bunch of adults can just not stay away. There was absolutely no need to be shoulder to shoulder with each other. I wore my mask provided by work and overtime someone stepped closed i stepped back. I think it is going to be a long term. I'm not sure if I should wear a mask all day at work from now on? I read that unless your both wearing masks you are not protected I would only be protecting the people around me from catching corona if I had it.

I am quite thankful that tomorrow I have an appointment in the afternoon with the dr about my salivary gland surgery. So I will only be in work for a couple of hours.

Sorry for the long post and the moaning. I only went back to work in July for 2 days for 3 hours each time after being of since March . So having full staff and full children is leaving me feeling very uneasy at the moment.

Hi Lou.i dont think you are being dramatic. I'm ecv and when my son returns to college he is wearing ppe all the time and not just in communal areas.we are doing what is right for us and my level of vulnerability. Best wishes x

I think being comfortable is a big thing. I’m not sure it matters because my work won’t change anything i think.

Surely you are entitled to feel safe in your workplace even if that means taking matters into your own hands and wearing ppe.x

My daughter is returning to school and I’m anxious as is she. The school already said social distancing won’t be easy so they are pushing hygiene and hand sanitizer and using bubbles but they will be big bubbles. Social distancing seems to have gone out the window, where I am it’s not happening and you are not moaning it’s a genuine concern. I hope all hoes well and your unease subsides but to keep this Covid From spreading People must make an effort and I’d be inclined to mention Your unease if people don’t make the effort, it affects us all after all if people higher the risk of spread.

It’s all so very difficult isn’t it, 🤷‍♀️ Stay safe in the knowledge you’re not alone and best wishes 🙏

Hi Lou, I also work in school and I can totally understand your concerns.

I actually caught Coronavirus in school back in March ( along with the other adults working in my room) so have no desire to experience it again!

My senior management team have been fantastic and sought advice from the education authority. They were told I should work from home ( not possible with teaching) or they should guarantee 2 metre social distancing at all times. This was never going to work in a room with 31 4 year olds so I’ve been given work to do in a little office all by myself.

I really miss the children but at least I feel safe!

Perhaps you should speak to senior staff and also seek advice from your education authority and your union. This will help clarify your situation.

If nothing comes of that, perhaps you could gently remind your colleagues that you’re in a vulnerable position and would appreciate the taking more care around you.

Thinking about you Lou, take care,

X

My work place wouldn’t allow me to do work somewhere else. I wouldn’t even ask because I know they would respond badly to it.

I’ve decided I’m going to focus on myself and make sure I stay back from people. And I’m going to ask the people in my room if they do transfers with me could they also wear a mask. As we have a lot of 2 people hands on moving and handling to do.

Hi Loulamb. Your mask interpretation is correct. If fitted properly they offer some protection to others....not the wearer. Avoiding contact with others and lots of hand washing are the most effective ways of beating the viruses. Best wishes Kevin

Thank you I thought that was the case.

I am going to stick to good hand washing and avoiding people as much as possible. I might also see if others would wear a mask when they are near me if we have to do transfers.

Paul Howard published “Covid 19 -returning to work”, in July, it is on the main website. I will try to find the link for you.

Don’t hesitate to tell colleagues to keep their distance when possible.
