Off topic - anyone for a little distraction?

Hi all

I thought we might all be looking for a bit of distraction from things (I know I need to stop watching 24 hour news and trying to get through to Sainsbury’s customer services). I got a brilliant e-mail through from Shay & Blue perfumes and the founder Dom De Vetta was explaining that Desert Island Discs was first started in 1942 by the BBC to make life slightly more bearable during wartime. He then went on to give his favourite songs, etc. And I thought this might be something a bit more light hearted that we could do. (I hope Dom doesn’t mind me borrowing his idea).

You list your 8 favourite songs, favourite book and a luxury item you couldn’t be without if you were stuck on a desert island (or in self isolation) with a short description on why you’ve picked each.

Anyone want to play? 😀

Ok, this sounds like a fun one. I’m going to start my list. I love soooo many songs, that picking the 8 favorite is going to be tough.

Will start 1) Have I Told You Lately that I love You by Van Morrison

2) maybe Crying by Roy Orbison

followed by a lot of other Van Morrison but will have to think good and hard about this!

Book would have to be the scriptures if I could only take one book.

And can a husband count as a luxury item? If not, an air conditioner, because desert islands can get HOT! 😳(but so is my husband 😉)

I’ll have to do more thinking on the songs though...

First cab off the rank, fantastic. Forgot to mention and may make things easier, you are given the Bible and The Complete Works of Shakespeare so this will let you choose a book 😁

Nice! So hard to choose. Let me think about the book then. I have a great friend who has written a wonderful book. If i’m not sent to the island before the publishers get it out, I think I’ll take that one. 👏

Brilliant.

Songs, rag n bone man I’ m only human after all

Bruno mars, catch a grenade for you

There’s a ghost in my house by R. Dean taylor

Spirit in the sky by norman greenbaum

Luxury items tea, sugar and milk

The book would have to be a biography of some sort.

There's a Ghost in my House - fabulous track! First came across it 20 years ago, via a boyfriend who liked to play it. We moved in together and I discovered - there actually was a ghost in the house (it used to move stuff about, audibly, in the kitchen cupboards)! But seemingly a friendly one.

Can I have pieces of music instead of specifically songs?

If so a random choice would be

Beethoven's 9th, 4th movement if a whole symphony is too greedy

Tomas Tallis' Spem in Alium (which I've loved for years before 50 Shades was even thought of!)

Patti Smith - Kimberly

Rodrigo y Gabriela - Tamacun

Snow Patrol - Set fire to the third bar

Talking Heads - (Nothing but) Flowers

James - Sometimes

Zaz - Si

I'm sure if you ask me tomorrow it'll be different though

Book - A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry

Luxury item - a mahoosive watercolour set.

That took ages, kept changing my song choices!!!

I LOVE The Talking Heads. Fun in a small LA night club decades ago too!

Another good choice👏

Great idea!!

But so tough to choose just eight tracks (I've excluded classical, as there are so many contenders, I wouldn't be able to draw up a short list.) So, pop/rock that springs to mind without too much dwelling upon the matter:

Prince - Purple Rain

Roy Orbison - You Got It

Kate Bush - don't know if I can pick one above so many other contenders; perhaps This Woman's Work

Patti Smith - again, how to choose? Maybe a live rendition of People Have The Power

Led Zep - Whole Lotta Love

Pink Floyd - sooo tough to choose - so I haven't!

Steve Winwood - Valerie or Higher Love

Bob Seger - We've Got Tonight

Oh, I have to have a ninth: The Proclaimers - Sunshine on Leith

Book - just don't know if a novel. Although Brideshead Revisited is particularly wonderful.

Luxury item - mascara; always makes me feel better!
