Taking care of your hands with increased hand washing

Hi everyone,

I've heard from lots of people with lupus who have sensitive skin and have dry, irritated hands due to increased hand washing and especially use of alcohol hand sanitizers.

We've published a quick article with some guidance for looking after your hands through the pandemic;

Good advice. We are encountering new territory and new problems. Thank you for always being on top of things and a step ahead of us. Your help is so much appreciated.

A lovely pharmacist recommended calendula cream for chapped skin as it binds cells...having had peeling lips from HCQ, I can say it worked for me! Thanks Paul!

Plus I've bought a bulk load of disposable vinyl gloves (still available at an online store near you! :) ) for opening deliveries, then I pop the packaging straight in the recycling bin with them on, as I read somewhere the virus can survive for a couple for days on cardboard and packaging...see on MSN news they're the latest fashion in LA! :)

We were taught this as nurses as we would wash our hands so many times during the day..

Many of us found one of the most nourishing products to be Palmer's cocoa butter handcream as it is very easily absorbed and non-greasy. It's been fine on my sensitive skin and usually available in Boots. (Other products and chemists are available).

Also, with hand hygiene we were taught that it is really important to keep nails short and false nails were a no-no as bacteria gets stuck underneath them. Nail brushes were also a no-no unless they are single use because they breed bacteria.

Happy hands Everyone x

Many thanks for this Paul. I was recommended Aqueous Cream by a retired ward sister. It is perfume- free and can be used not just as a moisturiser but as a hand wash or shower wash. My hubby had split thumbs and I got him to use my Aqueous Cream to wash his hands and they have healed. The best thing about it is a large tub costs only 99p! Available in any chemist, unless people are stock-piling it!

Thank you for the good information! I was a nurse for 40 years before I retired. I have always washed my hands a lot and have had dry red sometimes cracked hands. I have found Curel ultra healing lotion to be the best. Our supplies of everything here, though are very limited. I hope and pray you are all doing well over there.
