I have had Anosmia since before I was diagnosed with lupus. A while back I saw a forum discussion saying lupies with anosmia should have further investigations to rule out CNS involvements etc.
With me also suffering sudden hearing loss 9 years ago, I decided to ask for an ENT appointment. That was yesterday. I attended the meeting to discuss loss of smell but as it was ENT I also mentioned my hearing loss.
The consultant was excellent and sent me to audiology for an immediate test in a booth. Each time I have been tested previously my right ear has been completely dead. Yesterday I thought I might be picking up sounds. Incredibly slight but nevertheless. The audiologist confirmed that I did seem to be hearing sounds in my duff ear. Back to the consultant who tested me with a tuning fork. In the past there has been nil response. Yesterday I could feel some vibration and I believe I could slightly hear the tone.
I have been totally deaf in one ear for 9 years.
I don't know if this means anything going forward but it certainly put a smile on my face yesterday.
Next step MRI on the nose and sinuses. But that could be way into next year.
Just thought I would mention this. It may not lead anywhere. But I was told there was no way back. That may still be true. But never stop believing.

It might be inconsequential. The consultant said the level at which I was hearing sound would still be considered deaf, but I heard many tones. I can't remember that ever occuring before.
I wasn't aware of that. At the time of my loss all of the consultants I really respected didn't hold out any hope. I was told that a loud buzzing that I heard before everything stopped was the nerve cells dying. Then all stopped and I was just left with the most incredible vertigo.
A tuning fork test gave a nil response. No feeling vibration at all and certainly no sound.
I am not really expecting great strides forward. But this is how I approach all of my crises. I look for tiny improvements and just hope they continue.
Now a days I think no further damage is great news so improvements leave me feeling like a kid on Christmas morning! I am happy for your improving health!
I am in no way claiming a cure. It may indeed be just a blip or even something that has occurred occasionally away from testing and not been obvious.
The big difference is that something has occurred that I have become aware of.
If it is indeed a new development, I obviously hope the trend continues. I will let you all know if that happens.
I can't feel any obvious difference in normal life. The tones I was hearing in the booth were obviously at a loud volume and the recognition was slight.
The difference that I really picked up on was feeling the vibration from the tuning fork as previously I couldn't feel anything at all suggesting all was dead
I always look for tiny advances and then try to find ways to build on them.
It has turned around dangerous situations for me so often before that I may be a bit over optimistic.
I am not really. I just try to stay calm and focus on overall trends
