For KrazyKat and all horse lovers

This is a painting of horses I did many years ago using ink and PVA glue. It has faded a little over time, and the glass is a wee bit too reflective, but I thought it appropriate to post it on Remembrance Sunday in honour of all the war horses and other animals that supported our troops in the World Wars. This one is for Kat who I know formed a special bond with a special horse and for all animal lovers.

Happy Remembrance Sunday.

That’s so good to know Coco. Not meaning to pry, are the memories to do with horses ? So glad it has brought back HAPPY memories. 👍🏻😘.

🤗 OH YES ...such happy memories....been amongst horses all my life...had my own ponies & small horses, which i took care of as i grew up ...ridden the odd racehorse even...nothing more than living with horses though (only dabbled in showing)...life with my immediate family was pretty disturbing, and it was friends like the 2 lovelies in your very touching beautiful painting that were my closest friends, & comforters...am sure you know what i mean....we have neighbours’ horses around us here, but my main friend is one of our closest neighbour’s 30-something year old donkey, Luke 💞

Yes, animals are so loyal and pleased to see you no matter what you are wearing, what your hair is like or even what you smell like!🤪 They are not judgemental and as you say can help you through rough times with their love and comfort. So glad my painting has brought back those happy memories for you Coco. 🐴🥰

What a fantastic age Luke is - he sounds wonderful. What colour is he? My grandfather was Greek and travelled everywhere on his faithful old donkey. When the war was underway he had to part with him which broke his heart, but after the war he went to market and bought another which looked very like his old one. When he got him home the donkey knew exactly where to go to find his shelter. My grandfather then realised it WAS his old donkey he had back again! 😃 Thanks for sharing your story Coco. 😘Xx

😯GOSH😆GREAT FAMILY STORY 👏👏👏👏👏 will post a Luke photo ASAP...

He is grey with a bold black cross ...

he’s not a cuddly type...played hard to get at first...but before long he was nickering as he galloped over when he saw me coming 😍

Luke sounds a real character, and he’s obviously taken to you Coco. 🥰

It must lift your heart to see him race over to you calling to you.💓 What a wonderful feeling❣️ I’d love to see him so yes, please do post a picture of him. Looking forward to seeing him. 😘💕

What a wonderful story! Your grandfather must have been overjoyed to have Luke back in his life again. Like Joey from Warhorse! 🐴💝💕xx

Yes Horsewhisperer, my grandfather couldn’t believe his luck to have his faithful old friend home again.❣️ What are the chances of that happening? It was a story my old uncle enjoyed telling many times. 🥰

I never saw Warhorse as I was afraid it would tug rather too much at my heart strings. But I did hear it had a happy ending. 😁

🤗😘

Wow, the same donkey, really? I call that a tender mercy from the Lord. How great was that??

We have horse stables behind us. The owners of the stables run a boarding facility. I feel really bad for these horses because they are each in their own small pen, very little shelter over head, and the owners don’t keep it as clean as they should, not by a long shot. They own plenty of land but there is no pasture for these horses to stretch their legs. ☹️ And their owners don’t come very often because there’s really no place to ride around here, except a short stint of dirt road between the back of my house and the stables.

Spotty-ewe profile image
Spotty-ewe in reply to

Yes, my grandfather was VERY lucky to have his loyal friend returned to him.😀

The situation with the stables behind you is abysmal. Is there an animals rights/rescue centre that can be contacted? They need somebody in authority to lean on them by the sounds of things. Very sad. 😔

From what I’ve been told, one of our city officials boards a horse for his daughter there, so they won’t do anything. My husband has called the health dept on them. My husband is so mellow that if he calls the health dept on them, you know it’s really bad! It took care of a lot for a long time, but I think they are slipping back into their old ways. I’ve tried talking to the wife, but she is (and I hate saying this, but it’s the nicest way to describe her) a moron. She is a moron, a liar, and obviously doesn’t care whatsoever. She’s a very sad and pathetic woman.

I did go on Google, for what it’s worth, and ‘rated’ her business being brutally honest. I seriously don’t know why anyone would keep their horse there. I call it the ghetto of horse boarding.

Spotty-ewe profile image
Spotty-ewe in reply to

That is so sad a callous moron and her husband are in charge of the welfare of those poor horses. It is surprising the city official who boards a horse there for his daughter would even tolerate the treatment the animals are having. Very strange indeed. But good for your husband and you for trying. I hope more people will join you in your campaign to improve the conditions for the horses and perhaps submit a petition or suchlike. Very, very sad.

in reply to Spotty-ewe

It seems that over the past 5 years or so (we’ve lived in this house 17 years) their business has been dwindling. They use to have huge riding events all Saturday long, etc. They use to have illegals living in trailers on their property too, but the trailers are gone, which makes me think they can no longer afford the extra help. Their two sons were teens and preteens when we first moved in, but they are long gone now. They did a lot of the ranch work. I use to walk by the front of the property a lot and liked seeing the horses, though their condition made me sad. There use to be a llama and Emu farm next to the horse ranch, but they are gone now too. I’m pretty sure their business is going down hill. We use to her the horses whinny and bey all day. Every once in awhile you could hear them kick at their stalls fencing, but we don’t hear that like we use to.

Like Bob Dylan said “the times, they are a changin’ “.

True Brook, and not for the best, at least not where those poor horses are concerned. All we can hope for is their business collapses completely and quickly so that the horses will have to go elsewhere. 🙏🏻🤞. Take care Brook 🤗😘

Spotty-ewe in reply to Lupiknits

Thank you Lupiknits.😘 It was a very interesting medium to work with as with a damp cloth it was easy to wipe off some of the painted areas to give the ‘peeling paint’ effect on the stable window. Not sure I could do it now though! 😂

Aww, thanks so much Horsewhisperer. 😘 With your username I take it you have had horses yourself? I was never lucky enough to own one but enjoyed helping friends groom and exercise their ponies when I was a young teenager.👍🏻 Happy days! 🥰💕

Yes, very lucky to have grown up with them and I have a couple of horses that my daughter and I hack around on. I am so pleased she shares my passion for them and my 24 year old horse modelled for her GCSE art final piece - I’ll post it up here so you can take a look. I remember the pigeons and the dogs too today...xx

I’m sure everyone would love to see your daughter’s art final piece of your grand old horse, so yes please post it.

Horses are such wonderful loving animals. 🥰 Yes I also think of all the pigeons and dogs that helped our servicemen and often gave their lives in doing so during the wars. Special creatures one and all. 🐴🕊🐕. 💕

O" Spotty that is so sweet!!!! And for you to be kind enough to honor this special day, and friend. You also are very talented, the painting is very beautiful, fading gives it real character. I love horses, as we have moved to the country side, we get first hand with these majestic animals, and our storm puppy I posted on my post, loves the cows too! Animals in our lives be it by pictures or real special moments bridges the gaps of nature and time. Thank you for sharing this with us all. Bless you spotty, and peace be with you.xxxxx thestorm🤗🤗

Thank you so much Storm. Animals give us so much whether domestic, farm or wild I think the least I could do was to honour them on such a special day. Peace and love to you Storm.🙏🏻 Take care. 😘🤗

I have always had an admiration for horses but they always scare me. I know this is because I have not learnt to read their body language, as I am good with other animals that I understand better. Their size and teeth scare me.

Lovely picture.

I can understand that and was nervous myself when I first encountered a horse as a child especially having heard my English grandfather had been killed by the kick of a working horse (in the stomach). But my father taught me to stay away from the rear of a horse unless it knew you well, to never approach it without letting it know you were there and if the ears went back and eyes stared to beware. I soon learnt from my pals with ponies that they are generally very friendly and amenable creatures with great affection and loyalty and I loved them dearly always wishing to have a pony of my own. Now I’m 64 I’ve never achieved that dream but luckily have very happy memories of a horse-filled childhood. 🥰
