I take Hydroxychloroquine 200 one a day in the morning, I have been suffering from on going nausea and my GP thinks Hydroxychloroquine is the culprit, even though I've been taking it for 4 yrs. I take Zentiva brand. Is it ok to take it in the evening? I always take it with food.

Hey, definitely have it right after a decent sized meal and if you can get omeprazole, try that for a few weeks. I actually needed omep at the start but not anymore. Do you have low blood pressure normally? I find that my low pressure contributes to the nausea I get from meds

Thanks Jodie, I always take it with a meal. I have High BP and also atrial tachycardia and take two tablets for those conditions wich I take at the same time as the Hydroxychloroquine. I just wondered if perhaps I should separate them and take the Hydroxychloroquine in the evening to see if that would help. I had a camera into my stomach last year and everything was fine.

Thanks I used to take omeprazole many years ago but stopped taking it as I was told it is only meant for short term use.

Why dont you try taking half a pill in the mornings and half in the evening? That would be easier on your body and also produce a more even concentration in your body. Most people take two times a day i think. I at least take two times 200.

Thanks miccika that's an idea.

I found that it caused terrible stomach cramps if I took in the morning. I now take at night & all seems fine

Thanks Angiedj. Do you take it with dinner or bedtime?

Hello

I had problems with a very noisey gurlging tummy when I started this but it settled down quite quickly.

I take 200mg in the morning and 200mg at night.

If I don't take with food, I take with a small glass of milk.

I do however insist on the Zentiva brand.

Quinoric made me poo my pants..... TMI??

I also take Ranitidine to protect my stomach.

I hope you get this sorted out.

Thanks Wendy, I always take it with food. Is Ranitidine over the counter?

Hello again.

No, it was prescribed. 150mg tablets. I think most over the counter are 75mg? If I run out I buy them over the counter.

I had a terrible chest pain incident when I thought I was dying and might need an ambulance. GP prescribed it. When I looked through my notes, (my lupus care locally has been terrible and I complained) it appears that an ENT had recommended a stomach protector for possible silent reflux about 4 years before and it has been ignored. Because I hadn't had a copy of the ENT's letter, I hadn't known to ask.

I then found out that a lot of people here take stomach protectors when started on lupus meds.

I take one batch of tablets AM - hydroxychloroquine, MMF, mepacrine, anti-histamine in the moring.

Lunch time - ranitidine (I guess if you take this within 2 hours of other meds, that your medications wont be properly absorbed?

Before bed - hydroxychloroquine, MMF, different anti-histamine and amitriptyline

Hope that helps.

Can I ask those of you who take ranitidine or omeprazole when you take them, do you have to wait some time after taking Hydroxychloroquine to take them.

Thanks Wendy, just sent another message and I think that you have just answered it, about leaving time between meds. What a fright you must have had when you had the chest pain incident. Thanks again for replying to my questions.

I take hydroxy twice a day..at first I found it caused heartburn n nausea so decided the best way to take it was with goats milk.

I'm surprised though that you've been on it for 4yrs n haven't had any problem but recently u have been experiencing nausea.. GP thinks u might have suddenly developed this symptom? Seems unusual to start experiencing side effects after 4yrs?

If it's causing nausea n you're thinking of taking it in the evening u might have some probs in the night..how about taking it midday-ish? Xx

Krazykat26 I have had stomach problems for years off and on but I have IBS and put the nausea down to that. I follow the low Fodmap diet and have had all sorts of tests which haven't shown anything, so I'm at a loss as to what it could be. I have also on occasions when I've thrown up and it's all really getting me down. Thanks for your reply.

Be careful with the Plaquenil. nearly made me blind

I took 200 in the morning for years. When they added 100 at night the nausea started. I take ranitidine with it. I still have some trouble. I never thought about it being plaquenil. The mornings ranitidine helps.

I take one tablet with lunch, one with dinner. I eat half my meal, take my tablet then finish my meal. Haven’t had any problems taking them this way.

Yes that's what I do, take in the middle of a meal, thanks. I don't even know if it's the cause of my nausea but I thought I'd give it a try. Thanks.

Phillipo, that's why I stopped taking them and our GP only prescribes them short term.
