Sunscreen advice please

Hi, I’ve been diagnosed with Jessners for some time now, but am suspecting it may be lupus. Has anyone got any advice on the make of sunscreen you find helpful? Thanks in advance

Hi I'm not alone after all. I have Jessners as well also Urticarial Vasculitis and photosensitivity.

I use a sun block, cover up as much as possible and if it's like today stay indoors from mid morning till tea time.

Thinking I might be a Vampire.

Hi i have been prescribed ultrasun factor 50 , via rheumatologist. I also buy It cosmetics factor 50 make up which is great !!

My rheumy nurse recommended I use neutragena factor 100 which works for me and there is evidence that although nothing can be 100% this is a close match (97/98%). I also sometimes use factor 50+ on arms.

Yaoh sunscreen is good, made from organic natural ingredients.

I like neutrogena broad spectrum with helioplex is 100spf. I’ve recently turned into a vampire and cannot tolerate the sunshine on my skin

Sunscreens with Mexoryl are most effective against lupus sun reaction, if you live in a country where they are allowed. The US (FDA) permits it only in small amounts, so other ingredients do most of the work. Brands owned by La Roche Posay have it --they own the patent.

Look for mineral base sunscreens 50+. Mineral based ones are w titanium dioxide and zinc dioxide. Non mineral ones have ingredients that interact w hormones, so those are not good for us.

I buy Ultrasun extreme 50+. It rubs on easily, non greasy, waterproof and gives your skin a bit of moisture. I have dark skin, so I have to use moisturisers after every contact with water. I am photo sensitive, so this covers all bases in the sun and on holiday. It costs around £20-30 but a little also covers a large area and lasts all day.

You need a minimum of SPF30 sunscreen, and applied several times a day or if you wash it off.

Look for brands that say they are non-comedogenic (don't clog your pores) as some of the very high SPF50's will cause breakouts.

I love Aveeno products and use 'Postively Radiant Sheer Daily moisturizer which has SPF30.

I also never ever sit in the direct sunlight (don't sunbathe or suntan, ever). If i must be outside, I try to do it early in morning and late in the day and only for short periods of time, or stay in the shade while I'm out.
