Incredibly sore throat won't go away!

I seem to constantly have a sore throat. It's making me miserable as I don't even want to talk some days it hurts that much.

I say it's my throat and I definitely have swollen glands more often than not but I feel like it's the part of my tongue that's in my throat that hurts and very often the soft palate which I can see gets gross and inflamed. I've tried lozenges, warm drinks, cold drinks, mouthwash but I do not have the ability to gargle!! 😂

Does anyone else get this? Is it part of lupus?

I can provide a picture of the roof of my mouth if anyone wants to be grossed out or are curious 😉

Thanks xxxx

Hi cathylou, I have that when I'm flaring, tongue and all...a German doctor prescribed sage, peppermint, camomile, cloves...you can buy all those in lozenge form in pharmacies there, and as tea which can be used as a mouthwash. Steam inhaling Vicks or any of the above is soothing too...it's horrible to have, much sympathy xxx

Sympathy here. I had a similar bad bout and my moments of relief came with watermelon, of all things. It seemed soothing to me (I’m allergic to other melons). Just crunching into it and all the juice filling my mouth was something to look forward to, at least.

Great idea and I have some here ☺️

Eekt is right about flaring, it's been a year and I'm still figuring out the difference between general life and a flare but I've woken in pain in new places and my giveaway symptom of a flare is muscle weakness I think so it's a sofa day today xx

Do you take meds like cellcept/others to decrease immune reaction? ask PCP to test you for candida/yeast/bacteria.

Yes, mmf. If its yeast, can it just come and go without treatment? Xx

I would make sure my PCP tests me for it and ask about TX

Do you get acid reflux at all? I often get a sore throat if I am suffering with acid. I have found some degree of correlation, in my case, with consumption of dairy products, wheat containing products and sugar.

Sometimes just cutting out those foodstuffs seems to help. I dont think it is imagined as cutting those things also gives me a cleaner tongue.

I also eat more citrus fruit on these occasions which seems to help.

If the acid, in my case, is still there, I take milk thistle capsules which seem to stop the acid.

You haven't mentioned acid so possibly your problem lies elsewhere though.

Sucking on cloves can numb throat pain.

I have had reflux in the past but it seems to be under control with ranitidine xx

I also have throat/voice trouble. Every muscle in your throat is covered with connective tissue. This means when your throat is sore DONT STRAIN TO TALK! You’ll damage the muscles under the connective tissue. Use things that keep your mouth moist. Do check on GERD with your doctor always. Best of luck to you. 🍀💛

Hi

Poor you I really feel for you as I get sore throats & swollen glands so I know how you feel. I know some medications can cause a sore dry throat, so possibly that may be part of the problem or you may need your tonsils out. If so don't rush into it, as my sister who also has fibro, at 44 years old had a terrible time and her recovery was very slow & painful.

I had my tonsils out as a child as everytime I got tonsillitis I'd have a febrile convulsion. I've suffered with throat infections on and off over the years. One Dr even said its because I'm quietly spoken and so not using my voice box correctly 😂 xx

That is interesting. I have a friend who talks very softly. Now she can’t talk loud and she strains often.

It's funny when I need to raise my voice to the kids if they are being to loud to listen, they say I sound demonic 😂 I cannot shout! Lol xx

Ye I have no idea why I can't do it, I can get it to throat without swallowing but can't do the gargle! Lol x

Cathylou have you had that checked for shingles? If shingles is stuck in the cervical nerve roots of your neck you can have recurring shingles outbreaks in your mouth/throat.

cathylou profile image
cathylou in reply to NeuronerdDoaty

I did not know that! Sometimes it looks more like tiny spots x

I think it looks like a recurrent virus stuck in the nerves. We are more likely to have things recur that other people never do bc of our immune system. I’m not talking STD, I’m talking the chicken pox herpes that always stays with you and breaks people out in shingles. I’ve seen mouth breakouts before and this I think is worth checking out. Easy lab test. Warm salty water until you know. Swish and spit a few times a day.

I'll have to see if I can get an emergency appointment next time it looks this way xx

That would be good. A blood test may tell you any time but more likely during a break out. Many people have recurring shingles. Since you told so much my husband said it’s okay to tell you his is stuck in L2-3. That’s his exit area. (Old surgical area.) He was so embarrassed but it’s not that Type. Mine is in my left middle finger. Mine is called Herpes Whitlow. I’ve seen it in throats before. It’s important. You’re important.

It's so bizarre as today I'm losing my voice and sound manly (lol) and the pain has gone! I'd rather be hoarse than in pain tho!! Xx

Ouch that looks sore :( I get little spots on my throat and my tongue and throat flare up quite a lot. I had loads of throat infections as a child and teenager and when I was in my thirties I ended up in hospital with a quinsy from having a throat infection go bad. I'm also quietly spoken, but I lose my voice if I try to speak any louder.

Has the doctor checked it recently? Just in case it's a recurring bacterial infection that needs antibiotics.

cathylou in reply to MAG68

No by the time I wait for an appointment you can guarantee there's nothing to see on the day. It doesn't always look obvious. If I show a picture they assume as it's not there on the day it's cleared up and to go back if it comes again 🙄 xx

Hi Cathylou

My 2 favourite cures for mouth and throat issues are saline and turmeric.

Saline worked for me when I was getting horrendous mouth ulcers when I first started taking MTX. A pharmacist just told me to gargle with saline 5 times a day for 1 min. And it worked!

Another is turmeric which has been used by the Chinese and Indian's for thousands of years. 1/4tsp of turmeric in half a cup of hot full fat milk (the heat + milk release the curcumin, the active ingredient). Twice a day and don't eat or drink anything for half an hour after taking it so it has a chance to work.

Be careful with turmeric. Just know it thins your blood in case you have surgery or an epidural. FYI only.

Thanks I will keep that in mind.

I cleared it with my consultant before I started taking turmeric as I was trying to see if it would help with inflammation. Consultant was happy for me to go ahead but after 6 or 9 mths (can't remember) I gave up as it did not do the trick. However brilliant for coughs especially chesty ones.
