I’ve been diagnosed with lupus for a little over half a year, i’ve been put on hydroxychloroquine or plaquenil around the same time too. I’m only 16, so it’s not menopause, but my period started to come light and late and then completely stopped. I did the idiotic thing of refusing to take my medicine about a month ago (the flare ups were not worth it) and my period came back! Is this just a coincidence or does plaq affect my period? I’ve searched it up online and i’ve come up blank.

Does Plaquenil affect my menstrual cycle?
Hi. I have been taking Hydroxychloroquine and Plaquenil for many years and the medication did not interfere with periods. However, I was older than you are and because it did not affect me it doesn’t mean the medication won’t I interfere with some other persons men’s cycle. I think you need to speak with either your consultant or GP to discuss this issue further. Keep in touch. Sending hugs.

Have you discussed this with your GP or rheumatologist?
Having had a look in The Lupus Encyclopedia, there does not seem to be any interference between hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) and menstrual cycles. According to the encyclopedia, it is not uncommon for women who have SLE to have irregular menstrual cycles. When SLE is less active, menstrual cycles generally tend to be more normal.
