RASH: sitting under fluorescent lighting at work makes my skin feel like it's burning, and this happens.

I've developed various symptoms, some very bizarre, since I started to become unwell in March 2016. I am back and forth to the GP to only be, as I feel, fobbed off with excuses. When I say: I know my own body and I know something isn't right, the GPs just look and say: you're not dying, you don't have a life limiting illness. At no point have I said I think I do, however, I know that something inside isn't right. I thought I'd made a breakthrough when I was finally diagnosed with chronic vitamin D deficiency back in February, although some things have improved, the majority of my symptoms are still there and new ones developing.

I've had a slight rash on my face for a number of years, but I never really paid much attention to it until recently when it's been getting worse. The rheumatologist I saw (I have Raynauds) said I don't have Lupus as my bloods are "normal". I do, however, have many of the classic symptoms of Lupus. The rash on my face isn't a "butterfly rash" as it's not over my nose and is only slight on the left cheek. Th photo is of my right cheek after sitting under fluorescent lighting whilst at work. I noticed this pattern after having spent a month working from home then returning to the office. My skin feels like it's burning and I itch it gently, I don't scratch my face and make it like this.

My question is: can a rash like this be Lupus or something else. I just want to hear other personal experiences as my GP just doesn't understand.

Many thanks to you all in advance!

A x

Hi there, I have been treated for lupus for the last twelve years. Last year I noticed that when I sat in front of my iPad, or the television, or visited the vets which have fluorescent lighting my face would go extremely red and hot. Then when I had a few minutes away from it, my face would go back to normal! My rheumy didn’t recognise this as a lupus symptom. But then there are over symptoms that I’ve had that he hasn’t recognised as being connected to lupus which most certainly are. I feel that it is another lupus symptom. I am also super sensitive to the sun, and try to avoid it at all costs. Hope this helps x

Hi there,

It's very possible anything could be happening and you know your body and when something isn't right. The problem is getting people in your corner. Most of us have had similar experiences there. I don't know how difficult it is to get referrals for you, but a Dermatologist could be a route for you? They know way more than I ever expected. I thought they would deal only with the skin and what shows up on it, but they are fully aware of the systemic reasons that some skin reactions occur, plus they think of things and directions that Rheumatologists and most certainly GPs do not. I would definitely recommend trying to see a Dermy. Saying about the sun/light issues -- that burning feeling and show pictures and time frames of your rashes. Mine has been a stellar addition in my treatment.

Good luck!
