Good morning I was diagnosed with lupus since 2004.

I have two children my daughter is waiting to find out if she has Autism, I think my son could also have the same problem too.

The other problem my son has is obesity I'm wondering if because of me having lupus has caused this?

I'm very lucky to have carried my children , because a lot of women can't have children that have lupus.

Hi there, my son has ASD, Sensory processing disorder and dyspraxia. My daughter also shows a lot of ASD traits. I am wondering the same thing as a lot of my friends who have connective tissue disease and lupus also have children with spectrum disorders.

Hi thanks for your reply he has Irlen and dyslexia. He also has no confidence I have taken him to the doctors waiting for an appointment for Counselling. If I move this things in his bedroom he knows that was another sigh. Dose any of your children have the obesity problem?

There is a post on this site some where that had a lot of feedback on this exact question?

Maybe try and search up In the search bar. Hopefully someone else may have the link and post it.

I have 3 children, but it’s my son whos displaying more learning disabilities than my 2 daughters.

I will try and search for it later if no joy. It was certainly interesting hearing others feedback x

Thanks you.

Good morning

I also have Sle and a son and daughter and i echo your words regarding blessed with kids :)

My daughter isn’t autistic, (although she has a lot of traits) but my son is and he’s also dyspraxic. And hyper mobile. I don’t think there is a proven link between lupus mums and asd children, but I’ve heard of too many for it to be a causal link in my own opinion.

My son was also obese, but this I feel wasn’t due to my lupus, but his demands and wants for food....but mostly, he grew like a beanstalk!

He’s now 17, 6’4 and still growing. But as he changes into the man he will become, the weight is dropping off. When I took him to the doctor concerning his weight in his early teenage years, she measured and then again 6 weeks later. She told me not to deny him anything, he had grown an inch during that time and said he was like a Christmas tree....out, then upwards, out then upwards. Is your son taller than average?

It must be a very troubling time for you as you wait for diagnosis, but all I can say, is no matter the outcome regarding if they are or aren’t asd....they will still be exactly the same children you had the day before, my son is funny, caring, kind and happy....I can’t ask for any more than that, and wouldn’t change him for the world :) x

Hi thanks for your reply

My son Normal highs for his age he is 13 and a waist 44 I have to get his school pants made to fit him.

in reply to djsema

My son was also 44 trousers at that age, although being tall I could buy school trousers from m&s. And by ages 15/16 he was tipping 19stone Although my son did demand food, it seemed that his intake wasn’t enough to make him so much bigger than us....so I guess it was also due to metabolism and his body storing everything.

If you are due to see the doctor, then I would suggest keeping a food diary of exactly what he has for a week beforehand. Hopefully it’s just puppy fat and as he gets older and hormones change it will all vanish away x

Thanks so much for your support. I feel like My son is not the only one.

in reply to djsema

Oh bless you, he’s deff not alone, just think of him as more to cuddle....and once he’s a man and that weight drops off, he’ll find his way to the gym, then he can carry all the shopping bags and do all the lifting and shifting for you :) x

Hi djsema,

I have had a look in the Lupus Encyclopedia and it is not likely that having lupus will affect your child’s health/weight i.e. being obese. The NHS’ website provides a full overview on how to tackle childhood obesity which you can read here: nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-we...

There have been studies looking into women with autoimmune disorders i.e. SLE and their children having autism but results are inconclusive. Some studies show evidence of a possible link whereas others do not, more research is needed looking into the link between mothers with autoimmune conditions and their children having autism.

Today, with close monitoring, advances in technology and better understanding of the disease, many lupus patients have successful pregnancies.

Hi there , I have UCTD symptoms of lupus and lots of autoantibodies to scleroderma. My son has dyspraxia and awaiting autism diagnosis although it is obvious he has autism. Also sensory processing disorder. I've been doing a lot of research as I believe my middle daughter is also affected and am going to have them tested for fragile x.I am seeing a strong link between autoimmune diseases and the FMRI gene that causes fragile x. If the mother is s fragile x carrier then the boys would be more affected. If the father was the carrier then the girls will be x
