My very ill dog

Hi everyone just had to talk to someone. My dog has just been diagnosed with autoimmune haemolytic anaemia. He has to have a blood transfusion and immunosuppressant drugs. So angry. He is so lovely and my very dear companion. He doesn’t deserve this.

Oh josie...i’m so sorry and am so glad you posted...this is very hard on both ouf you...we nursed our 2 big rescue lurchers through bad long term illness...some of the time we were even on the same meds for similar illness, which bonded us even closer...so am v much feeling for you. Our dear dogs both managed to live to 14 despite illness...how old is your dear dog? I hope you both have clicked with your vet....our vet helped us all greatly to get through this, and gain several unexpected beautiful years together...beautiful & treasured despite the strain and pain of illness. Am sending you both positive vibes and wishing you every best wish...hope you’ll let us know how this goes...am feeling concerned about the strain rebounding on your health...courage....do you have help with things at home? Take care josie...love to you both...courage

Thank you. Yes I have good support at home. He had his bloo transfusion and is back home with prednisolone. How ironic we both have autoimmune diseases. The vets were brilliant very supportive one of their own dogs donated the blood. We just have to keep an eye on him and hope the steroids kick and the transfusion lasts long enough for it to work. Once again thank you xx

You’re v welcome. Thanks for explaining things! What great vets you are working with! This situation is really really the best possible for you both (all). It can only be very tough, but you’re well in formed and ready to cope. Wishing you every best wish XOXO

Hi Josie, I'm totally feeling your sadness as my 6 year old Labrador is currently struggling to keep going. You must remind yourself that you are doing everything that can be done and hopefully the drugs will achieve remission.

Keep us posted on progress please xx

Hi thanks for your thoughts. I had to take him back to the vet this morning . He has some sort of internal bleeding with no obvious cause. All scanned again, perhaps a clotting problem. Got to take him back for more blood tests tomorrow. There is a lot of blood in is bladder they gave him antibiotics as a precaution. I am beginning to feel we are fighting a losing battle. X

Oh dear...this is a very complex matter...am so sorry josie...you’re clearly doing your best to take this “1 step at a time”, but can only be very hard not to fear the worst. You’re on my mind XO

Try not to lose heart as it is early days for the medication to be taking effect. My dog is, I think, losing his fight. We’ve had 3 months of steady deterioration but he still enjoys sunbathing, eating and having his turnout tickled so we keep hoping. Thinking of you xx

Hi pixie and everyone. Yesterday we got a new puppy. The house was unbearable without Wallis. It has Helped a lot . Gave us a focus. We are all shell shocked. We have always had another dog at home to help with grieving before, hence the new puppy. He is a cocker spaniel called Hugo or HB like Hugo Boss because he rules the roost already.

Friday I went to Wallis ‘a grave down the garden and totally sobbed. We have a bought a statue like him and decorative stones to put round him. I am going to plant roses there. My favourites. He followed me everywhere , I still wait for him to follow.

Please don’t think bad of me getting a dog so soon. I will never get over the loss of my dear boy.

Oh josie I could not think bad of you for giving a little dog a home. I think you are totally kind, caring & selfless in your strength to do this. I am so sorry to hear of Wallis & the heartbreak which comes with loving a dog /dogs so very much. My heart has been broken many times when my sweet little puggies crossed the bridge to their other world. Josie do you know the poem for the death of a dog called “crossing the Bridge”. It is so sad, heartbreaking but deeply understood by those who love their big hearted canine family. Josie sobbing is part of grieving for your dear friend.... allow yourself to sob as much as you want. You have come to the end of an era with your old friend.... now another era begins . Thank you so much for letting us know, I am thinking of you & hoping there is a very small comfort in knowing that your ‘pet’ is without pain. It is those who no longer have him that are suffering. Take care my dear friend xx Pixiewixie
