Hi. I have had Hashis for years and Sjögren's too plus Raynauds and a very long history of eczema with alopecia. My nails have always been flaky and weak and I've never been able to grow them properly. For the last few years they have had red halos at the top and occasional yellow crusts from pompholyx eczema and there are always splinter haemorrhages scattered about the top part of nail. Ridges are only significant if they are horizontal - most people will have vertical ridges as we age. The state of my nails (toenails too) usually reflects how active my autoimmunity is and also shows in Beaus lines on toenails if I have had toxicity issues with meds.

This is my favourite page to learn a bit from: nhs.uk/Conditions/nail-abno...

I always have to keep mine short, clean and use a good nail file to keep them from breaking or snagging on things - which I hate! I never use oil or varnish or hardener because this only makes them more annoying in the long run. I'm often getting cuticle infections or Pompholyx eczema around them anyway just now so all chemicals are best avoided like the plague - including cheap, scented soaps etc. I use doublebase gel on my hands all the time now and feel this is moisturiser enough for them. I think I probably have overlap with Scleroderma and RA (my first diagnosis) so maybe will be told UCTD as well as confirmed Sjögren's.

Ps if you are on Hydroxichloraquine then this is worth noting:

"Grey nails can be caused by medications such as antimalarials or minocycline."

OMG!! my nails have been going mental for a couple of years now - ridges, peeling in layers & My toe nails have gone to thick to even get nail clippers on them😢 my nails have been annoying me for ages but knowing u have kinda the same problem must mean it's just another symptom of this horrible illness! I buff mine down and keep them short, that's stopped them from peeling in layers like an onion! I hope that helps. One love, Carla💜💙💚
