Hydrogen breath test update

Well I went for the breast test this morning and cried all the way home got there and the nurse told me what I had to do take a big deep breath and hold my breath and breathe out into this machine similar to a long function machine which I have had done and was able to complete okay .

After attempting it only twice she Told me that I wasn't able to complete the baseline as I wasn't getting enough breath into the machine she would email my gastroenterologist who would refer me again for the test I was so upset as I fasted pretty much yesterday and for the previous month I've had to follow all sorts of dos and don't I am absolutely devastated dreading having to go again

I am frightened I won't be able to complete the testing again and she said the other way of doing it with putting the tube down my nose oesophagus into my stomach and taking a sample from my Small intestine

Sorry that I Couldn't pass on any more information to you

I have so many procedures et cetera done and nothing seems to faze me and feel that I have failed at a simple breath test

Wishing you all a healthy and happy weekend

It will be okay! Honestly the more you work yourself up the harder it will be just take a deep breath ;)

In all seriousness try to relax before going, if you are really struggling you may have to accept the tube...

I hope all goes well!

Thank you , looking at going private it didn't help when the nurse told me she only had one minute 24 seconds until she had to see the next patient😳

That should not have happened, you should have been given the time you needed. I'm sure the next patient would have waited a few minutes.

Hope it goes well next time.

Please don't be disheartened. I had to do this three times as I am short of breathe all the time and do not fill my lungs adequately. I had to sit outside and go back after the next patient. I am amazed that you have been treated like this. The whole point is that people are there as they have limited lung capacity. I feel that you should contact PALs at your hospital and raise it as a complaint.

I have asthma and was booked for a spirometry test recently. Its a 2 app system where you are tested, then given a blue spray to inhale and told to go back into the waiting room and wait for 20 mins before the next bit....hence 2 appointments. The machine stopped working half way through the 2nd part, I lost count of how many times I was asked to breathe in the tube. I had to go to reception and rebook, the earliest app being 2 weeks away..wasted afternoon but they rebooked straight away

I find it had to keep going when there seems to be nothing left to breathe out and the nurse is saying "keep going, keep going" over and over, head ready to burst and feeling dizzy and wishing she'd give it up!!

Happy to say the 2nd app went ok, machine and tube fixed but still too many times being asked to blow....she kept on going about those base lines. Be brave and dont let them push you into anything thats too uncomfortable. Hope all goes well next time Sunshine xxxx

I can relate to this! I had 'poor patient effort' written in pen on the PFT report despite trying so hard that I was at the point of fainting during some of the tests.
